Truly The "Living" Bible

Thought this story I came across was interesting... Don't know the author or the authenticity. Just a neat thing to share.

His name is Bill... He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans, and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college.

He is brilliant. Kind of profound and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college.

Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students but are not sure how to go about it.

One day Bill decides to go there for a service. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat.

The church is completely packed and he can't find a seat. By now, people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything.
Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet.

By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick.
About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill.

Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can't blame him for what he's going to do.

How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor? It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy.
The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man's cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can't even hear anyone breathing. The minister can't even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do.

As he reaches where the young man is sitting, they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he won't be alone.

Everyone chokes up with emotion.

When the minister gains control, he says, "What I'm about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget."

Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will ever read!

Who among us knows the heart of another.
It is our own heart we are to know.
With that heart we are to accept all others .
As Christ accepted you.

I love this. Perhaps because I could aspire to be that old man. With some frequency I play hookey from my church (semi-formal) to visit one almost totally comprised of hundreds of twenty somethings: mostly artists. The dress code on a one- to -ten is about two. Their praise code is a ten. They make a great effort to sit with me that I should not feel uncomfortable in my tweeds. Turn-about is fair. milt

2G, your blog reminded me of Milt..and I chuckled when I read Milt's comment.
Oh the Lord works in wondrous ways in our hearts and when we obey, and it does not matter who we are - it will confound the world even the world in the church. I hope what you said is true as an example for us to follow.

Thanks for sharing 2G.

Its not my brother or my sister standing in the need of prayer.. It is me O Lord.

Years ago;

A young man named Todd, heard God. He heard God while holding a gun in his mouth preparing to kill himself. God asked Todd to give Him (God) another chance... .. Todd did and came off the mountain. He went to church and received the Lord.

A couple of months later, he was in Newport News, Virgina visiting a church down the street from where he was living.

Todd did not have super nice suit, He had tattoos over his arms. Did not own a BMW.

The church leadership suggested Todd to leave...

Today... Todd is a bitter man; believing that why should he fellowship with church hypocrites? Indeed...

It's easy to love the lovable... That was never the test...

Will we answer the call to love the un lovable? That is the test... Jesus came to love the unlovable... May we likewise imitate Jesus!!

Thank you for sharing this with us.. It is more and more poignant for our times...

Bill, unfortunately you have hit the nail on the head. For some, they become so wrapped up in their 'Christianity', that they act out plain 'insanity' looking down their noses at people like you described. They obviously don't read what Jesus was saying in Matthew 25:35-46!

Thanks for commenting and continued blessings!! 2G

I seem to recall a crazy guy who lived in the wilderness, dressed in rags and ate bugs. I'm sure his hair was wild, but doubt he would have had any body art.

I wonder how John the Baptizer would be received if he walked into many of our churches today, especially if he walked down the center aisle saying "Repent!"

Great blog, 2G! Thanks for sharing.

Shalom, Art
