How many rules does a Christian need?

The answer you might give to this question may depend on your personality type. If like me you like rules there are probably many. If like my wife you don't ... I daren't say anymore as she proof reads for me!
If we look to Jesus there are 2 rules. If we look to Moses there are 10. If we look to the Jewish Law there are over 600. If we look to a church denomination there may be loads and many of them unwritten.

Are rules necessary?

The answer is ‘yes'. Even in the Garden of Eden there was a rule - ‘you shall not eat' (Genesis 2:17) Mark Twain joked that God made a mistake with this rule - He should have forbidden them to eat the serpent! Why do we need rules - because we are human and not divine. Adam and Eve had a rule even though they had not yet sinned. The development of Old Testament Law was an attempt to obtain holiness (God likeness) by obeying rules.

Were laws a success?

The writing of Paul and those found in Hebrews give a resounding ‘No' in answer to this question. Hebrews says - ‘For the law can never make those who approach perfect' (Hebrews 10:1). And Paul wrote - ‘For what the law could not do, God did' (Romans 8:3-4). But the Christian who lives in the Spirit fulfils the requirements of God's law, summarised as: love God and love your neighbour.

Does the Holy Spirit give us rules?

The answer is ‘yes'. The Holy Spirit gets us to keep God's commandments (1 John 5:3) - and exactly how many commandments? As many as you or I need. There are many rules in Paul's letters to the churches and they are best seen as the Apostle teaching the churches how to live by the Holy Spirit because he couldn't be there in person to teach them and be an example.

Does the church give us rules?

The answer is ‘yes' but it begs the question ‘why'. Are they rules to teach us how to live in the Spirit or laws to control the congregation? Rules based on biblical morality teach us about living in the Spirit. Rules that take away our choice over non-moral issues may be questionable laws.

Three cheers for rules; no cheers for rulers.

Was the Law necessary? Not until there were law breakers.

1 Timothy 1:9, Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient- - ,

I view the "rules" as I view the instruction manual for assembling one of those...you know..."some assembly required" things. Let's say I buy a new bicycle, but it's in a box, all in parts, with a couple of packages of bolts, nuts, screws, clips, etc. Now, if I want to actually be able to RIDE the thing someday without killing myself, I had either better be able to follow the "rules" of assembly, or fully understand the function of each part, and know by heart how it goes together.

Applying that to following our Lord, the Law was the instruction manual, with all the step-by-step instructions. The Spirit is what explains to us the function of our lives, and our relationship to God.

If you know a bicycle like the back of your hand, you don't need the rules...you just put it together like it's supposed to be.

If you know God, and are filled with His Spirit, then you don't need the "rules" because they are in your heart...you understand the reasoning behind them, and they fall into place in your life.

But like assembling a bicycle, my advice to anyone who does not feel totally comfortable with the reasoning and spirit of the walk with the Lord...then stick with the "rules." Or...as you said, as many as you need.

Blessings
Phil
