The Book of John, the Beloved - (1:1-14) - Christ as the "Son of God"

The Book of John, the Beloved
Chapter 1, Verses One through Fourteen

Title: Christ as the "Son of God"

Theme:

Christ is the Son of God and His Deity is portrayed throughout Scripture. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (vrs. 1). "We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from His Father, full of grace and truth" (vrs. 14).

Preface:

As "son of man" means one born of man, so "Son of God" means one born of God. Hence the title "Son of God" proclaims the Deity of Christ.

Jesus is never called "Son of God" in the general sense that men and angels are children of God (Job 2:1.)

He is the Son of God in a unique sense; Jesus is described as sustaining toward God, His Father, a relationship not shared by any other person (being) in the universe. As son of man means one born of man, so Son of God means one born of God. Hence this title proclaims the Deity of Christ. Jesus is never called a Son of God, in general sense in which men and angels (Job 21) are children of God. He is the Son of God in the unique sense. Jesus is described as sustaining toward God a relationship not shared by any other person (being) in the universe.

We are able to witness this unique relationship as we search Luke 2:49.
Jesus Christ was aware of two things:

  1. He describes His relationship with God as His "Father"
  2. He was doing His Fathers business.

In view of the fact that the Eternal Son of God lived a perfectly natural human life we can follow the following pattern.

The self-consciousness of Deity came about as Christ was always the Son of God; But there came a time when, after studying the Scriptures, that the consciousness of Christ began to naturally reason into His mind that He, the Son of Mary, was none other than Christ, the Son of God.

Study:

John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.

  1. Christ Is The Word

    1. John 1:14 - "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us"
    2. Rev 19:13 - His name is called "The Word of God".

  2. Christ Is Eternal

    1. Rev 1:8 - "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End says the Lord, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."
    2. Col. 1:17 - "And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist."

  3. Christ Is With God

    1. John 17:5 - "And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was."
    2. God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

  4. Christ Is God

    1. John 10:30 - "I and My Father are one."
    2. 1 Timothy 3:16 - "God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory."

John 1:14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we beheld His glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,
full of grace and truth.

  1. The Word Became Flesh And Dwelt Among Us

Scripture tells us that from the time of creation God the Father, Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit, were among mankind. That is, until the time of separation of God from man at the time Eve and Adam ate from the fruit of good and evil (Gen. 3:22.) At this tragic time of history, God sent man out of the presence of the garden, as well as out of the presence of the Unity (Gen. 3:22-24.) Because of this major separation of God with man and Gods' continues love for us, we have the blessing of 1 Timothy 3:16. "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory."

  2. The Glory As Of The Only Begotten Of The Father

Not in conflict with Romans 8:14, Christ became the only Begotten Son of God. There is no time in history when we hear God address someone as His begotten son except when He was referring to Christ the Messiah (Ps. 2:7; Matt. 3:17; Luke 1:35.)

Through scripture we have a fabulous view of the relationship of Christ baraGod, and conceived by the Holy Spirit. Even demons have acknowledge Christ as the Son of God (Mark 3:11.) The Devil himself attempted to disprove Christ's Sonship (Matt. 4:3.)

King David, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, foresaw Christ's relations with God the Father. "Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, 'How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? For David himself said by the Holy Spirit: 'The LORD said to my Lord, 'Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool. Therefore David himself calls Him 'Lord'; how is He then his Son?" (Mark 12:35-37)

  3. Full Of Grace And Truth

John 14:6 tells us that Christ testified of Himself as "the Truth." When Christ states this, we must believe that Christ IS Truth, for Christ is without sin (Hebrews. 4:14,15) and Christ being Deity He cannot be only a part of something, because He is Complete and full. "I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus," (1 Cor. 1:4) Grace comes through Christ Jesus (John 1:17) which was given to Him from His Father (Luke 2:40.) Most importantly is that "through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved" (Acts 15:11.)

Christ is the truth because He was always truthful. Pilate in his royal palace before not only the people he lead, but before the spiritual leaders of the time, was quite clear that Christ was true. In John 18:37 Pilate spoke to Christ, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."

Closing:

We, as Children of God, need to find assurance that Scripture reveals Christ to be the Son of God.

The relevance of Christ as the Son of God is to show mankind that God so cares about His earthly children, that He would send His own Son into the world to save the world. (John 3:16)
