Why I Will No Longer Be Using Facebook!

Why I Will No Longer Be Using Facebook!

I very rarely talk about other websites, because it is typically not an acceptable course of action when one website owner starts talking about another website. It is just a frowned upon action throughout the industry.

However, over the course of the last few months as Facebook has gotten more and more popular and more and more folks are starting to use it, I've had more and more requests from people I know to start using it myself more.

Yes, I have an account at Facebook.

No, I do not log into it every day.

No, I do not even log into it once a week.

Heck, sometimes I even go a month or more without logging into that website.

To me ChristianBlog.Com has almost everything I am after in a website.

So, why do I not use Facebook when it seems like half the world is using it?

For the same exact reason I never used myspace!

Advertisements with +80% naked women.

Sure I am a guy, and thus one would think that nature would have me wanting to look at almost naked women, but guess what... I don't visit social websites to look for pictures of naked women - I visit social websites because of what they are... social websites.

The last time I was over at Facebook, here is the very first thing I encountered.

Now, if you really really really want to see what it was that made me stop going to Facebook, click the image to see what I was shown in some advertisement... but be warned... there is (what I would consider) an unacceptable amount of clothing on this person... considering Facebook is suppose to be a website that allows minors to be members.

First off, there is no way that person is "over 30"... she's hardly 18 years old if you ask me!

Secondly, she's wearing nothing but a pair of underwear and a wife-beater shirt.

Thirdly, and the way I figure it... if Facebook is going to be throwing THAT kind of advertisements in my face, I'd rather just not visit it.

Shame on Facebook for not controlling their advertisements in such a way as to make it family-safe!

And rest assured that we will NEVER allow that kind of advertisement here at ChristianBlog.Com!

So, for those of you looking for me on Facebook... you might as well give up - because I don't plan on visiting that website very much (if at all) in the future!

John,
I am proud of you and your stance against this type of advertising. When one is a member of ChristianBlog, why would we need to go anywhere else for friendships?

I am so happy to hear of a man who is resistant to this kind of advertising. Kudos for trying to remain pure, and thanks for the relief (not that I was worried) that we won't have to put up with that kind of impropriety.

I just registered a few weeks ago and am not impressed. I didn't know what I was doing and clicked "Yes" to allow invitations to friends, not knowing the website was taking every single person in my address book and sending them invitations. I have been so embarrassed for two weeks now. I just got another person (a missionary friend) who said she was already on facebook. I told her about what happened so she understood. Even my doctor, and college professors got the invitations. I really am so humiliated! I didn't even know how much if any I wanted to participate on this site. Needless to say, I am planning on being active with it. As you point out, CB is really the spot for friendships. and with the chat room, friendships are allowed to grow.

Sorry, I meant to say, I am NOT planning on being active in Facebook. (I have grandkids bursting through the door from school so am a bit sidetracked).

Hey, John,

I agree with you a zillion percent on that. My daughter uses myspace to show her art and communicate with friends, but she has every available filter against garbage showing up when she logs on. She does not allow any contact from anyone she does not already know, and she is very careful about whom she allows to contact her.

The sad thing is that a person even has to do all that to keep out the trash. Thank God, and you, for providing this carefree web site for Christians.

Hey fairhaven.

Yeah, I hear what you mean... I almost did that same thing too.

The one here at ChristianBlog.Com is MUCH nicer, safer, and friendly to use... and it doesn't have that "send to everybody in your contacts list" thingie like facebook does.

If you've got people you think might like to join ChristianBlog.Com head over to the ChristianBlog.Com Invite A Friend page!

Our has a very friend interface that connects to services like yahoo, google, outlook, and such to be able to help you pick who you want to send the invites too. And, if you don't like the pretty little interface, or it just doesn't work for you... you can always type in your friends email addresses manually! We make sure it works for everybody around here!!

Thanks for the comments thus far everybody!

I never have or would go to a place like Facebook, but I am sure impressed at your boldness in taking a stand against the ever growing junk on almost every website. Good grief, even Yahoo is almost over the edge. Way to go my man, thanks for taking a stand.

I got a Facebook account last year after my diagnosis as a way to stay connected with alumni of the Christian teen theatre company my husband and I had mentored for four years. Also, some friends of ours going to the mission field had set up a Facebook account as a way to stay in touch with them. Our church also had a facebook group and there is a breast cancer survivor group from a board I frequented as well as some relatives but...I rarely go on. Security is high and I've never invited someone as I just don't give out email addresses of other people!

I much prefer Christianblog.com!
