Bible Study for Busy People

We are starting a study of the Gospel of Mark on this blog. The study will be about 12 weeks; the daily reading assignments are very short. The idea is to spend just a few minutes a day to really squeeze a lot out of Mark. I know you are all busy, but I encourage you to write down your answers somewhere. Not only will it help you think things through, it will allow you to look back on this study and see what you have learned. Years later when you review those written answers, you may be reminded of something forgotten, be amazed by what you didn't know, or be reminded of what you were going through at this time and how God blessed you through this study.

I will post weekly assignments and daily discussion questions, and I hope you guys will post comments and questions on this blog so we can all learn from each other. Our timeline and some of our discussion questions are taken from a study outline published by Bible Study Fellowship (BSF). I am a BSF discussion leader, so the format and some of my questions may sound BSF-y, too.

The Gospel of Mark is actually taken from the preachings of Peter -- recorded, arranged, and shaped by Mark. Bible scholars believe that it was written in Rome during a time when Christians were heavily persecuted there. This gospel may have even been written because of that persecution, which was spurred on by the fire that Nero probably set, but blamed on the Christians. This may be why Mark includes many references to suffering, endurance, and discipleship.

The first week's assignments are below. Discussion questions for the first day will be posted tomorrow.

DAY 1 -- Mark 1:1-8
DAY 2 -- Mark 1:9-13
DAY 3 -- Mark 1:14-20
DAY 4 -- Mark 1:21-28
DAY 5 -- Mark 1:29-34
DAY 6 -- Mark 1:35-39
DAY 7 -- Mark 1:40-45

This blog was started on June 8, 2007, but whenever you may be joining, please start with "DAY 1."

Thanks! And before you start, remember to pray for the Holy Spirit to be your teacher, to reveal to you what He would have you learn each day. And when you are done, please be sure to post what it is that the Holy Spirit has revealed to you so that we can all be blessed by your experience. My hope is that we will all learn from each other and encourage one another by sharing our thoughts and questions on posts.

Your Servant in Christ,
Jae

I LOVE the book of Mark! I just finished a study on it this winter and found it very EYE OPENING!

I'll try to add just a little more generally about Mark:

Amen! Mark has no geneology - like the record of a slave. (John doesn't either, but John tells of the Word become flesh - something divine.) The gospel of Mark also has the most activity of the Jesus recorded - (not as much direct speaking.) And everything is done "immediately."

All of these things portray a slave. Only not just a slave. As the book unfolds, we see a Man who lives the life of the Slave of God to serve God and man.

Allelujah for the Slave-Savior we have portrayed in the book of Mark!

Wow! How exciting to have someone going through Mark the second time around! Isn't it amazing how God will reveal new things to you from the same book, or even the same verse, each time your read it? And I know your previous study will enlighten the rest of us as we read Mark with you.

I had always wondered why the tone of Mark is so different than the other Gospels -- thanks for the insight. I had noticed the focus on "immediately" and "soon," but not the focus on Jesus' activity versus speaking. Thanks for enriching our study so much!

I'm excited about this study. I'm sure I can add my insights as a "toddler Christian." Hey, at least I started walking and eating some solid food.
