Battling Secularizm

Today I heard a news piece France wanting to partially ban women from wearing full veils (burqa). First I thought it many be initiated by security concerns. In the U.S.A. many banks require people to remove hats as they approach the teller so cameras can get a good look. I could also see that for identification purposes picking up kids from day care it would be helpful. Upon reading the text version of the story I learned that it was not a security concern but a concern that they threat the secular nature of the French constitution.

"A cross-party panel of 32 lawmakers will investigate whether the traditional Muslim garment poses a threat to the secular nature of the French constitution"

I also learned that France has already banned certain items to be worn in state schools (unclear if this means grade schools, or state universities).

"France already has a law against Muslim girls wearing headscarves in state schools. It sparked widespread Muslim protests when the French Parliament passed the law in 2004, even though the law also bans other conspicuous religious symbols including Sikh turbans, large Christian crucifixes and Jewish skull caps."

What kind of a society will we have if we are required to compartmentalize our beliefs to be able to interact with society? Are spiritual groups taking note? If organized efforts are pushing spiritual beliefs into a shoe box, are organized efforts taking place to ensure spirituality is nurtured in its confined locations?

I think the very question you ask is the very question the people of France are trying to solve.

Remember that France has one of the largest (or maybe the largest) group of Islamic believers outside of the Islamic nations. To many families in France they perceive that their nation has been overrun with those who are Islamic, but like those in the South Western States of the USA believe their States have been overrun with illegal Mexicans.

National identity and National Security has always been at the heart of immigration throughout the entire span of modern history. How to handle the mass influx of those coming into a nation are often the defining factor of the true strength of a nations foundation.
