During his interrogation of Jesus prior to His crucifixion, Pontius Pilate asked Jesus, "What is truth?" not that he expected an answer. Some think Pilate was mocking Christ. When I read it, my own impression is of a jaded worldly man whose only truth is pragmatic self-interest. He knows that Jesus is not guilty of anything deserving death but to appease the Jewish leaders he allows Christ to be executed. It's recorded that he had a basin of water brought out and washes his hands before the crowd. Supposing a gesture would make up for his weakness and lack of honor. Did he have any conception of the magnitude of what he had done by refusing to render a just verdict and compromising his duty as a magistrate charged with the administration of justice. He little realized that he would someday face a judge who never compromises and always gives a just verdict. The man Jesus who was so cruelly murdered will one day sit in judgement over the very men who participated in His death and at the great white throne judgement Jesus Christ the Lord will mete out justice. The evil intentions of the men who plotted Christ death was used by God to bring to fulfillment his plan of redemption. They however will not escape the judgement of God. What is truth? He is the way, the truth and life everlasting.
