Separating Your Ego from Your Conscience

Suppose you had the opportunity to have sex with a beautiful woman that you are not married to, I mean someone that you really fancied. This would not be a harmless natural act but purely an ego trip. As you consider the possibility your ego tells you that if you did not then you would regret it for the rest of your life. At the same time your conscience would be telling you that if you did then you would regret it for the rest of your life. Your character would be stained and only God s forgiveness would remove the guilt. This is an example of inner conflict that most people suffer from.

A minister once said to me that your conscience can lie to you and it cannot be trusted, only the Bible can be relied upon for moral guidance. Isn t it clear from the above example that we possess both a conscience an ego, one the voice of God correcting us and "spurring us on towards love and good deeds." Hebrews 10:24-25. The other voice is a Devil sent demon controlling our thoughts, hell bent on making our lives a misery with its constant lies. If you do not understand the above then it is easy to think that your conscience lying to you.

If you learn to be "clear minded and self-controlled so that you may pray" 1 Peter 4:7 by "being still" Psalms 46:10 then you will start to separate your dark prideful thoughts, impulses, desires and compulsions from what you know deep down to be the right thing to do. Turn off your televisions, radios, music and computer games. Start to sit quietly and be objective to your thoughts, stand back from them and observe them.

"But solid fuel is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil." Hebrews 5:14

The reason why people find this very simple act so difficult is because when we do sit quietly the truth about our sinful nature catches up with us and in our prideful states we cannot bear it. Fear not, even though at first you may think it s the wrong decision the pain will pass and from it something beautiful will grow. You will receive fulfilment from within instead of without.
