"A 'fearful' thing to fall into the hands of the Living God"

'Fear', is one of the biblical words that has not been properly defined by the majority within the church. By church I mean the body of Christ. Those who have publicly confessed Jesus Christ, and been baptized into His body. They have a host of names, and some even identify with no sect in particular, or only those likeminded with them. Their own individual sect, I suppose .

Anyhow it is viewed, we have failed 'miserably' in how we SHOULD "fear" God! Yes, that is fear, as in alarmed, frightened, afraid. And now perhaps I got someones attention. Good. Let us then see how this word is properly defined. The word for 'fearful' in the title, which is Heb. 10:31, and also used in Heb. 10:27, means: frightful, i.e (obj) formidable. If one reads the verses from 26-31, it is obvious that this text speaks of a greater "fear" than just a reverent awe. And a reverent awe is as far as the majority will go in defining how we should 'fear' God. Shame on us. Properly define the word, or just stop talking about it, cause in many places you define it wrong. In Strongs Concordance by the way the word is G5398, used in Heb. 10:27,31.

Another word translated from the Greek, is G5401, and is defined:(to be put in fear) alarm or fright.

And I do hope that none are so hardhearted and blind that they can not see the obvious meaning as defined here. Let's just list the verses that this word is used in scripture.

Acts 9:31, "Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied."

Romans 3:18, "There is no fear of God before their eyes." (What a shame that so many believers teach them/us that)

2nd Corinthians 7:1, "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." (So many like to just focus on 'these promises' part, and don't wanna focus on that last part)

Ephesians 5:21, "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God"

Ephesians 6:5, "Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ." Yes, this is speaking of those masters according to the flesh, but the clear instructions are to serve in fear and trembling, "as unto Christ".

Philippians 2:12, "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation wth fear and trembling." Well, there it is again, just like in Eph. 6:5, "fear and trembling".

The definitions from the Greek, of these words, are very plainly speaking of more than just a reverent awe, as so many want to teach that 'fear' means in the scripture. Yes, many words are and can be defined in the sense of reverent awe, but not all of them. Dig deeper into the original languages, it helps in the meanings. And don't just focus on an 'alternate' given that you desire to use, and ignore all the others.

Yes, absolutely, God is love. That is why God sent His Son, He loved the world in that way, that He gave His only begotten Son. The blood that Jesus Christ shed, is the only means of appeasing the wrath of God, toward our sins. 1st John 4:10, "propitiation" is used in that the word not only means mercy seat, but also the means of turning away God's wrath toward sin.

Which is also why Hebrews 10 is given, in that this that Jesus Christ has done, is NOT, (repeat many times), NOT, to be taken lightly. READ the context! And actually believe it! For one who neglects, and takes lightly, it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God. Beloved, it is, whether we take the scripture literally, or not.

What is being preached in a lot of pulpits across America today? Sadly, that how we vote in the coming election, will determine a lot, regarding our nation. The truth is, it is how we are doing in this regard, toward Almighty God! And not the election! The history of Israel in scripture was given for our learning, as examples to 'not do as they did'. They also thought that they could turn and neglect God, in idolatry and sin, and they even thought that Egypt and other surrounding nations, their gods, and governments, could deliver them from their coming fall. They ignored the prophets who were telling them what was coming, if no repentance toward God, and turning to Him, was done. This nation is listening to every message but the same one from this same God. And the results will be the same.

This has been a burden on my heart for months, years now. I hope that you will take the time to read the last 4 blogs, they also are part of the same burden. We need to be living and walking in fear and trembling , just as these scripture tell us. We need to lay aside every weight, and the sin that so easily besets us. It is indeed, not because I write it, but because the words of scripture tell us, and we have taken too lightly, 'despite unto the spirit of grace', that "it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God"

The coming election will not change anything, if we ignore. We have turned to these idols for far too long now. We even hold them up behind the pulpits all across this nation, as a means of hope. This nation is a people who would rather believe evolution, and relativism, secular humanism, abortion, gay rights, adultery, everything and anything, but God, His Christ, and His word. And that word is not the 'other book', or any like it. Instead of God Almighty, and His Son, Jesus Christ, we rather speak and desire a freedom FROM them, (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit) and not IN them. Be not deceived, turning back to God with repentance towards Him, through Jesus Christ, is what we and the world over must do, to prevent the fall spoken of here. It is the only way to prevent it. Whether we are truly fearful or not, we will still fall into His hands, this Living God.

Fearing God

Well said and in a timely manner also. I believe that the reason we do not fear God is because we do not walk closely with him. The Holy Spirits voice has been stilled in our hearts because we have ignored his voice and therefore we have hardened our hearts to God. We have fallen into the same situation as the Children of Israel found themselves in after crossing the Red Sea and because of this they died in the wilderness.

I share your burden, billyb: I, too, feel that the fear of God is "more than just a reverent awe."

Good advice from your blog with regard to digging deeper:

Dig deeper into the original languages, it helps in the meanings. And don't just focus on an 'alternate' given that you desire to use, and ignore all the others.
