"But GROW in grace"

2nd Peter 3:18, "But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever. A-men."

Some of the last recorded words we have from Peter. Like anyone who knows their time left is short, Peter shares what God has laid upon him in this time, and in this last epistle in scripture, bearing his name. I know that every word of scripture is useful, God-breathed, for us. But some of the writings I hold dear, are of those that were among the last, of these as they wrote and shared them. These that God had chosen and sent, and inspired to write what we have as scripture.

"Grow in grace". The simple meaning for grow is just that, to grow, increase. Jesus uses the same word when He tells us to consider the lilies, how they grow, in Matt. 6:28 and Luke 12:27. Considering the entire context of Peters epistle, we know that he speaks of growing in grace, through the knowledge of God, and of Christ Jesus, 2nd Pet. 1:1-15.

Take the witness we have of those chosen as the Lord's apostles, who had both seen, and had been personally instructed by Jesus Christ. We have that preserved now for almost two thousand years, of what Jesus Christ taught, and did, and also the epistles of His apostles. Many through the centuries have attempted to deviate from their writings and teachings, and many of those teachings are still among us, as the tares, and as the leaven, among those naming the name of Jesus Christ.

But we are instructed to heed their teachings, and to GROW in grace, and the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We do these things for HIS glory. "Glory" is what we honor, praise, worship. We give "weight to" what we glory in. That is shown not finally by what we say, but by how we live and breath, day in and day out, it is a lifestyle, not just something we do at church, or just on occasion.

We have become a 'cheap grace' society, today, in regards to grace, and the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. If any generation would be termed as giving 'license to sin', and 'licentious', it would surely be this one. Not one, single, qualification of a pastor, or bishop, or elder, would include one who practices a same-sex relationship, in the scripture, and yet many have taken that license with it, and do exactly that.

Also, not one verse in scripture, would in any way bless such a relationship, scripture will do just the opposite, in warning. And yet many among the church, have also taken license here too. Many are removing crosses, as society is now offended by it, and also by God's wisdom and power, through the cross. So, the licentious remove. And, we dare call this 'growing' in grace?

The cross is central to everything, upon which our Lord Jesus Christ died, within christianity. A christian is called to their cross likewise, with their life, and therein is the offense, in the world-loving church today. If one truly wants to "grow" in grace, they will only do so, by picking up and carrying their own cross, and follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

There is no other way, really and truly. "To Him be glory both now and forever". Be diligent to be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless. Don't be found deceived, or ashamed, at His glorious appearing. A-men.

  billyb,

We are told to grow in grace but lately, I have been wondering if Christians have a clear understanding of what God's grace really is. Some now are beginning to see grace as almost an offense, speaking casually of it with a tone of disdain as if it were an opponent to good works. On the other extreme the term grace is becoming almost like Christianese, stripped of any real spiritual importance. It is becoming so common, it is spoken with an assumption all have equal understanding of what it is.

It is all a bit sad, really. There can be only one definition of the true grace of God. It is not a license to do anything nor is it cheap. It may be a gift to us but Christ paid for it at the price of His precious life. He made grace available and it is the only way we can ever be acceptable to our holy God. Redemption can never be earned by good works. Only the Son's perfect work done on our behalf are acceptable to the Father to merit the value required for salvation. Such a high price was paid for grace and the only way we can access the benefits of it is by faith in the giver.

I feel so inadequate to verbalize this wonderful gift but I would say my understanding as poor as it is would be that we are to grow in our understanding of what Christ did for us. He did something for us that we could never do for ourselves. The more I see just how impoverished I am without Him the more grateful I become in response to Him. The more I learn of the adequacy of the holy Son of God, the more I value this immeasurable gift of grace given to me. It doesn't make me feel free to sin. It makes sin repulsive to me because of the cost it demanded of the One I love.

Grace is Jesus Christ, the Son of God given for us and to the least deserving one among us. Yet we are all equally undeserving recipients of it by faith in Him.
Grace is almost too wonderful to comprehend, so all I can say is Thank you God. May I grow in gratitude and praise to you for freely giving me Your best, the One who made the grace wherein I stand this moment even possible.

Thank you for your comment. It is humble and glorifies our God. The more perfectly I understand the cross, the more I find grace, and the more drawn to Him I am. What a perfect work God did, for us, through Jesus Christ His Son. The Holy Spirit draws, convicts, and reveals all that we are and have access to, through Jesus Christ.

God Bless you much.

Mercy is not giving us what we deserve which is death. Grace is giving us what we do not deserve which is not only life but abundant life! Like you said, it is not a license to sin nor is it cheap for it was purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ.

My heart breaks, Billy, at the way so many Christians treat God's precious gift of grace. Either they use it as a license to sin and live however they please, completely disregarding God or they behave like grace is not enough. How can it not be "enough"? Others, ignore the growing part. They demand perfection immediately disdaining the idea that we grow.

Every living thing in this world, grows. From the very beginning of our existence until our death, we grow one way or another. I am so thankful for grace, Billy. I am so thankful that God remembers I am but dust. I am thankful that He patiently picks me up, teaches me and helps me to grow.

Blessings!
