"Gnashing of teeth", and the full meanings

Two weeks ago I blogged about seeing buttercups in bloom, on Feb. 4th. Though we have had several frosty nights since then, this morning on the drive out they were still perked-up and yellow, just as before.

In reading and studying about more of the words found in the Bible, I got drawn to the word "gnash", "gnashing". Jesus Christ spoke of it often, in reference to a future state that many condemned would be in. In Matthew 8:12, 13:42, 22:13, 24:51, 25:30, and in Luke 13:28. In each of these references the Greek is G1030, and defined as 'a grating (of the teeth).'

I had, in the days I first started reading the Bible and studying, about 45 plus years ago, thought these verses more of a reference to pain, and of one being in intense pain. But, this is not the only intended meaning, not in each instance in scripture. The Hebrew word is referenced three times, in Psalm 112:10, Lamentations 2:16, and in reference to the crucifixion of Christ, Psalms 35:16, and of those who had Him crucified. It is H2786, and has the same meaning as G1030 and G1031, in the Greek, as 'grating (of teeth)'.

The same word, in Acts 7:54, is written in reference of those who stoned Stephen, and is G1031: to grate the teeth (in pain or rage), akin to the same word that Jesus Christ used in references given above, in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. What does this mean? That this word is used, scripturally, of those who would speak evil of and harm others, instead of only referencing pain.

When a person is convicted of and by the truth, they will either submit to the truth, or they will become offended and even lash out, 'grating of teeth', at those who spoke the truth to them. Either way, the truth of God's word will always cause an action to be taken.

Yes, there will be 'weeping and gnashing of teeth', in that dreadful place that Jesus Christ the Lord prophesied of, and warned us about. Jesus Christ warned and prophesied of an 'eternal punishment', an 'everlasting fire', where the 'worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched'. And of those who will be cast into this dreadful place.

But, we can also see here, that it is very likely, it is even proven from the scripture itself, that part of this 'gnashing of teeth', will be that of hatred and anger. I believe that these people prophesied of, will not only be in eternal torment, but they will be showing an intense hatred and speak evil even then, of Almighty God, and of His Son Jesus Christ.

And also, in this, will come to pass the words and the prophecy of Revelation 22:10,11. The unjust will remain unjust. The filthy will remain filthy. There will be no escape from that eternal dreadful place. Such teachings that are otherwise are not from scripture, or from the Lord Jesus Christ. They are from mis-led men, who will twist and mis-interpret scripture. Let us all then, be warned. Even if many, will 'gnash the teeth'. God Bless.

  Hi Billyb

Eternal damnation is a very lonely place, because all there will be is the absence of God's love and only hate and anger will reside there. This hate and anger will not just be directed at God and the truth, but will be radiated out to everyone in that eternal hell. So everyone will hate and have anger for everyone and will try to stay apart from everyone else, because all will be trying to always lash out to others because of their own spiritual pain they each have. This will be a very lonely place. Being apart from God means they will be apart from all love and goodness. Can you imagine what that would be like? If I had enemies, I couldn't bear to see them in that kind of place.

I read your blog 'You'll just have to get used to it'.

They just don't know what they are doing. They have the chance to experience good and evil now, but if their choice is to choose evil instead of good (God). Then they will end up going to a place where there is no good at all - only evil.

Thanks for your blogs,
Mike

Thanks Mike. Be in prayer for folks such as this. 'They just don't know what they are doing.' Not in the fullness of it, no. God Bless brother.

Our job is to participate in His plan to prevent as much gnashing as possible.
Grace to you,

Even the Jews understood hell to be a place of torment. And I agree, their gnashing will also be at a God they hate. I suppose at that point they know nothing else.

Sad, considering man has the knowledge of good and evil, we choose evil when left alone. God is love, and his life in us, is the only hope.

Good word.

"His life in us" Absolutely. I don't believe God ever leaves us alone, but we just wanna be, and choose evil anyhow, in this life. And in the future state and place Jesus spoke of then, they will be alone, without God. Terrible state. Terrible choice they find, in the end.

Deep subject brother. I appreciate you reading and sharing. And the rest, "His life in us, is the only hope". So true!! Dying everyday is a joy, when we really understand and 'do' that.

God Bless you brother.

Thanks for your comment bibleguy64. I really do enjoy serious Bible study, which just focuses on Biblical text. Not real popular today, and not many really want to if it gets uncomfortable. Lot of adding to words and subtracting going on today.

God Bless brother. I look forward to some of that serious study, and will be watching for your blogs.
