'Not for you to know'

Acts 1:6,7, "When they therefore were come together, they asked of Him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7. And He said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power."

And 1st Thess. 5:1,2, "But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night."

What we do NOT see in these verses is the word SIGNS. Jesus Himself told us the signs to watch for, and He told us to watch, and be ready. The reason He told us that, is that we do not know the day or the hour. And further, here Jesus tells us it is not for us to know the 'times or the seasons'. Why are so many, doing exactly that? Did Jesus really mean what He told us? Many do not take seriously what He said, and that is sad.

Another thing we see a lot of, is that many will claim the words of Jesus were to the nation of Israel, and not the rest of us. When Jesus uses specific places, then we do well to heed. Such as "And when ye shall see Jersusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.' A specific place.

Jesus gave us the example of the fig tree, when its bud shoots forth. Jesus also said, in that context, "and all the trees". The meaning is not mystic. It is simple. When we see the 'signs' coming to pass, then know that it is near. Just like when we see the trees budding, we know that summer is coming.

But when Jesus was telling His disciples what to watch for, He was not speaking specifically to a Jewish nation and people, He was speaking to His disciples. The command to go and make disciples, and baptize them, of all nations, and unto the uttermost part of the earth, is more than proof enough of that.

We are seeing these 'signs' that Jesus gave us, budding. We are seeing the apostasy that we were told would come. We are seeing the turning away from the truth of Gods word, we were also told, would come. Jesus Christ our Lord, did not tell us to go and teach everyone all about the "times or the seasons", did He? Look at what He actually said. Why are many so convinced, that they know, exactly what Jesus said it was not for us to know?

What Jesus told us, was to watch for, and to recognize, the 'signs', that He gives us. And to be ready, and to be watching, and for that day to not come upon us unaware. This is what He wants us to 'do'. What about your family? Your relatives? Your friends? The strangers you see everyday? Those in the 'uttermost part of the earth'? Are you 'witnesses'? Do we go in the 'power' of the Holy Spirit, to 'do' that? If not, what is the problem?

Focus on what He actually said. God willing. Watch, Be ready, do not sleep, or tell yourself, my Lord delays His coming... ... ..

That coming will be visible, just as the disciples were told. That "HE' would return in like manner. That return (HIS) was not the sound of the wind, or the Holy Spirit, at Pentecost, either. That was what He promised, concerning the Holy Spirit, that He would send, to empower. He will return, and every eye will see Him, just as scripture says. Scripture will not teach what many greatly wish it did. Just 'Watch, and be ready". Amen.

  Hi Billyb,

Why do you think that so many want to know the times? Do you think they might be trying to figure out how much time they have left before they have to get serious and fully submit to the Lord?

Jesus says He comes like a thief in the night. Christ wants to keep this stuff a mystery and only reserved to Him and the Father in heaven to know. "Come like a thief in the night" could mean that He comes for our individual soul when we don't suspect it, or it could mean that he comes to put an end to the ages, or it could mean both. Maybe it even means something else. God keeps these things a secret for a reason.

God does not honor people trying to figure out how long they can be evil until they have to try to save themselves. God doesn't want us to come to Him out of fear, but love for who He is, which is complete goodness and pure love. I'm afraid anyone that comes for any other reason will be trying to save themselves and in turn will loose their soul to an eternal hell.

God wants us to always be ready to serve Him with all our desires to do His goodness - not to try to get ready for some end of things.

Thanks for this blog,
Blessings

Thank you for your comment. No answer that would suffice. I don't know.

I do firmly believe we should heed the signs scripture gives us though. To give us both, warning and hope. Doing what He told us to.

As for the 'times and the seasons', different reasons and motives probably. Each position one holds has adherents to them. And scripture as well, though that scripture may not be saying and teaching what they say it does. Adding, importing, taking away from what may actually be written.

We all have our own views, concerning. "Always be ready", I fully agree. Maybe not entirely about the "end". We need to serve, work, in His service, because an end is indeed coming, regarding this present world.

But I do agree in principle. None of us want to be ashamed at His appearing. That appearing is a promise. And a warning. And Thank you brother, for your comment. God Bless you.

Amazing how Jesus taught. The language in the text for 'times', concerns more of a general frame of time. The language used for 'seasons' concerns more of a specific time frame. It is always interesting to study about much spoken of, but we also need to recognize that much we simply don't know. No matter how deep we search. Watch, be ready, Jesus commanded us. Things are fixing to get shaken up, prophetically. Don't ignore the signs.

I think all of God's prophesies are to show us proof of what God is doing and/or has done. God is always trying to give us things to watch for - so we can have more faith in Him. If someone doubts there is a God, then they aren't going to believe to heed to the warnings. But if we can see by the signs of the times are relative truths to His prophesies, then be can more easily believe in the God which the prophesies came from. We can then be assured that there is a Holy God in control.

About the "times" of many prophesies, I see that they could be said of many times in history and also repeated as true in our times today. Because God is always the same and the sinful state of man repeatedly comes to a time when selfishness and pride comes to a point of almost pure evil - so these times end up repeating in history.

Blessings billb,
Mike
