There is an old saying about how you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink. It is very frustrating to know the truth but be unable to find anyone willing to accept it. Certainly Jesus Christ had that problem as did the Apostle Paul. Why is it that people can have the truth staring them in the eye and not see it?

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost :

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them .”

2 Corinthians 4:3, 4

The god of this world, the devil, literally blinds people’s minds who do not believe. He does this so that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ does not shine unto them. When a person’s mind is blinded, the truth makes no sense to them and they are utterly unable to receive the gospel. It is sort of like throwing a lifeline to a drowning person only to have them never see it despite being inches away.

Unlike politicians or corporations which change their message and image to get more results, the truth cannot be changed or it will no longer be the truth. We may tinker with the specifics of how we present the truth, but we can never water down or lower the standard of the truth in hopes of winning someone to Christ.

In the movie “A few good men”, Jack Nicholson’s character speaks the famous line “you can’t handle the truth”. Unfortunately this same thing can be said for multitudes of people in regard to THE truth. They simple are unable or unwilling to allow the light of the gospel of Christ to shine unto them. They look away, hold their hand over their eyes and cover their ears. They literally cannot handle the truth.

Many times the truth totally contradicts what people have accepted to be true. Many times the truth appears to be either a fabrication or a flat out lie. Many times people believe the truth is the lie and their version of what is true is the truth. We all have had many standoffs with people who adamantly reject the truth because in their minds it is the lie.

Pilate asked Jesus “what is truth”. How ironic it is that THE way, THE truth and THE life was the very person he was talking to. Jesus Christ is THE truth. He always has been and always will be. I do not care if someone can be scientifically proven to be true; if it contradicts THE truth of Jesus Christ it is a lie. Of course the whole ridiculous theory of man evolving from amoebas is a classic example of this.

All any of us can do is learn THE truth, stand fast upon THE truth and hold forth THE truth. If people want to call us liars, verbally abuse us or physically harm us for speaking THE truth in love; we should count it all joy. God certainly has great joy when His children are willing to stand up and speak THE truth.
