Feeling "blue" might be acceptable right now
Do you ever hurt deep down inside of your heart of hearts? Do you ever feel that gnawing type of ache that won't go away? If you have, then don't feel badly and do go running to a physician for medication. Instead, pause and consider that you may simply be feeling the sacred sorrow that flows from a tender heart receptive to how The Man of all Sorrows feels.
As the days rush by leading up to the 25th, people are quickly entering a mode that is either one of panic, anticipation or depression. Those who try to do and buy too much for the Holidays are like people on a ton of speed. They are in full holiday mode which means buying a million presents, planning for big parties, writing cards and the such. I truly feel sorry for anyone caught in this maze for it in many ways destroys the heart of the holidays.
Those who simply enjoy the holidays grow more excited by the hour. Of course these tend to be younger people who still believe in the jolly man who lives at the North Pole. Whether we still believe in Santa or not, there is something to be said for the simple joy and expectation so many youngsters feel at this time of year.
That leaves those who either have no feelings for the holidays or are battling depression issues and thus dread the next few weeks more than any others during the year. My dad was one of these kinds of people for his dad died on Christmas Day. Being with family, receiving many gifts and enjoying a nice meal did little to lift my dad's spirits. He participated in Christmas activities, but he never got blessed by them.
Whether it is good or bad, with each passing year the world seeks to destroy more and more of Christmas while replacing it with a catchall mid winter festival to whatever god people want to acknowledge. I really don't know if this is good, bad or meaningless. We all know that the true meaning of Christmas was lost long ago and replaced with a season to seek to buy each other's appreciation through gifts.
If you are feeling blue this Christmas season, it may clinical depression but it may be a reflection of our Savior's heart as His heart aches when He sees what this time of year has become. I truly believe that the blizzard many dealt with yesterday was the frozen tears of our Lord as He wept concerning the hard and cold hearts manifested by so many of His people.
If you want to make the most of this season, try to reach out in some simple way to anyone and everyone you know. What greater gift to give than the gift of the love of God shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit? It truly is the greatest gift we can give anyone we genuinely love.
