How does one "get saved" anyway?

Contrary to what a multitude of Christians believe, a person does not get “saved” by attending church, participating in the choir, giving money when the offering plate is passed, volunteering at the ice cream social, being an usher, going on a mission trip to some distant country or any of a thousand other “good works”. However important these works are, they have nothing to do with salvation.

The Apostles Peter and Paul made it very clear in the Book of Acts and in their epistles that the basis for salvation was REPENTANCE. Unless a person is willing to change their heart from saving themselves to allowing Jesus Christ to be their Savior, there can be no genuine repentance. Unless a person is willing to lay down their pride and haughty self sufficiency at the feet of the Lord Jesus, there can be no eternal life given.

When it comes to salvation, there are more apparent ways to achieve it than there are groups which preach them. Everyone has a song and everyone has a doctrine as to what it takes to “get saved”. For many, the root of salvation is based on the confession of sins alone. Although this sounds good, true salvation must go a few steps further or it cannot be found.

Salvation is not limited to confessing one is a bad person who has done bad things. Salvation is built on the foundation of the understanding of who Jesus Christ was and what He did in his life through His suffering and death and what God did through Him by raising Him from the dead and ascending Him into heaven. Without the understanding of all Jesus Christ WAS, IS and IS TO BE, salvation will be elusive, shallow or quickly lost.

It is only when a person begins to understand everything Jesus did, the significance of His sinless life, loving ministry and of course His painful death that they can begin to grasp WHO Jesus Christ is and WHY that is important to them. Only after this instruction can a person honestly and from their heart be convicted of their sin and ACCEPT the forgiveness of Christ and receive the gift of the new birth.

Simply confessing one’s sin does not purchase a ticket to heaven. One must be CONVICTED of their sin, willingly decide to CHANGE and humbly ACCEPT the invitation of Jesus Christ to grant them remission of sins and the gift of eternal life. Simply put, the things needed to “get saved” are:

1. Receive instruction in who Jesus Christ was, is and is to be

2. Be convicted of one’s sin

3. Willingly decide to change

4. Accept the free gift of Jesus Christ and His mercy, grace and love

5. Receive the gift of salvation, eternal life and fellowship with God

Jesus Christ always stands at the door knocking, waiting for each person to open that door and let Him in to dine with them. Once a person understands who He is, and how much He loves them; only a fool would turn the Lord away and reject His invitation to wash their sins away and bless them with an eternity of perfect peace. May we always accept His invitations and bask in His promises now and forever more.

Repentance involves much more than saying you are sorry. It means to turn away from as well. I believe you have put this well.

Though I was very young when I came to Christ, I clearly remember going through the steps you outlines. As I learned of Jesus Christ, there was a growing awareness that all was not well between me and God (conviction). I began to have a longing to make things right and be at peace with God. I fell on my face before God, not because someone frightened me into doing so or demanded that I do so. There was such a yearning in my heart to come to Jesus. Do we remember that yearning that can't be satisfied until we yield?

I was remembering the tears which suddenly started to flow before I even said a word. I began to sob so hard as the Holy Spirit revealed to me who I was without Christ but then... revealed to me that I could be at peace with God through Jesus Christ. I am sobbing right now even as I type this.

Who can forget that unspeakable joy which floods through your soul when you realize that you are forgiven and loved by God! I have heard your testimony, B2Y, and I know that you know exactly what I am talking about. There was that moment, that definite moment when you know you were born again. You "got saved".

Blessings!

In following your line of thought, which I totally agree with, can we really believe a child of 5-8 years old can process these ideas and make the life-long decision to be a follower of Jesus? If so, why don't we let them make the decision of career and marriage at that age, as well?

Actually, I did make a "career choice" about the same time... teaching which I did until last year when I was forced to retire from it due to health issues. I never did deviate from that path. It was the only thing I wanted to do and I did it. Though that's not typical, it is true of a substantial number of people. I have run into a number of people that are doing exactly what they have wanted to do, ever since childhood.

As far as children processing these ideas and making the life-long decision to be a follower of Jesus, my comment got so long that I have decided to publish is as a blog. I made a life-long decision at age seven and I have been a Christ-follower ever since. I followed Him through the rest of grade school, junior high, high school and college. My husband came to Christ at age 13 and never looked back. This is not nearly unusual as you might think. In fact, a very high percentage of people do come to Christ and faithfully continue to follow him when they are under 18 years of age. Of those who drift away... those who came to Christ as a child are much more likely to get "back on track" than those who didn't.

Reaching out and evangelizing our children is critical and must not be neglected! The day I got saved, was the day a "feud" ended on my block. There was a family that none of the children had anything to do with. The children were "rough" and the other children in the neighborhood called them "mean" and wanted nothing to do with them. Usually when this sort of thing happens... children do get "mean" for they are hurt and angry.

I remember being with a group of my little friends when the daughter from the family came up to us... ready to start a fight. I remember out of the blue stepping forward and telling her I didn't want to fight with her any more. You see, I'd asked Jesus into my heart that day and I was very sorry if I'd hurt her feelings before. Would she forgive me and would she be my friend?

I gained a new friend that day and a little girl no longer played alone. She moved away shortly thereafter but I think about her from time to time. I hope and pray that a little seed was planted which sprouted and grew and who knows... we may meet again someday around God's Throne. No one will ever convince me that the Holy Spirit did not help me understand what I was doing on that day I became a Christian. Never.

Blessings!
