This morning as I was returning home from driving my wife to work it was still dark as I got back on the Interstate highway. I always look at the half hour drive home as my reward for getting up at 4:00 am and doing an hour of driving before 6:00 am. I usually listen to my worship music and give my God His praise and pray for various people during the drive home.
This morning as I got back on the Interstate I noticed in quite a ways behind me an interesting thing which I had never seen before. There was an illuminated cross on the front grill of a semi truck. From a distance it looked very beautiful and I thought of what a nice idea it was to do such a thing.
Within a couple of minutes all warm and fuzzy feelings were replaced by the irritation I feel whenever any vehicle "rides my tail". For reasons known only to the person driving that truck, he/she decided that even though I was going the speed limit, it was not fast enough. But, instead of passing me, they came up behind me and tried to push me into going faster. I held my ground, and did not speed up and in due time the truck slowed down and by the time I got off the Interstate it was nearly a half of mile behind me.
The irony of this whole experience is astounding. Here I am obeying the law and a big gold illuminated cross comes up behind me and tries to push me into going faster than I am supposed to be going. Is this the way Christ operates? Is the message of the cross one of being "pushy"?
I hate being pushed. I don't mind being pulled, but I don't like someone behind me pushing me to either do something I don't want to do or go faster than I want to go. I don't believe for an instant that Jesus spends His days pushing us into anything. To the contrary, I believe the love of Christ constrains us, which is to gently lead us.
To me, it would be much more appropriate for a truck driver to have an illuminated cross on the BACK of his/her truck than on the front. When on the front, it shows up in one's rearview mirror and promotes the idea that Jesus is as cowboy herding us somewhere. When on the back, it appears ahead of us, leading us to where we need and want to be going.
Jesus Christ is indeed our fearless leader. He has gone down every road we ever travel in this life before, so He knows the best way to handle it. He knows where home is and will always lead us there no matter how foggy or stormy the weather might be. He will go before us and clear the way so that we don't stumble or fall. Thank you Lord for leading us home!
