Looking unto Jesus in all things
From far away the distant thunder heralded the approaching storm. Long before there was any rain, the sky gave warning of what was coming. The wise person looks to the sky and determines whether it is safe to proceed as planned. The fool pays no heed to the sky and ends up being caught off guard.
God has placed thousands of things in His Word which alert us to dangers and provide us the wisdom to navigate rough waters. If we will but look to His Word for answers, they are there. If we foolishly look to the world for answers, they will probably end up being wrong.
God allows us the freedom of choice to make up our minds as to where we go for advice, instruction and admonition. We can turn to Him and receive that which is good, pure and righteous or we can turn to the world and receive that which is putrid, corrupt and evil.
God encourages us to trust in Him with all our hearts and to look to Him for guidance and direction. God also allows us the freedom to trust in ourselves or this world and to look therein for wisdom. The choice is ours, and for that we should be thankful; for we have a God who honors freedom of will.
In these turbulent times when every day we are confronted with different sides to the story which all claim to be true, it is very hard to decipher what and where the truth really lies. For most, they gravitate to whoever screams the loudest or puts on the biggest production.
For many, they follow that which looks the best for surely that is a sign of truth. Who wants to listen to and follow a broken down speaker who has no nice clothes and drives an old clunker? Surely those who look the part are genuine and their words can be trusted as true.
There was nothing flashy about Elijah, John the Baptist or many of the prophets recorded in the Old Testament. These men were many times not only ordinary people, but they were (by the world's standards) the least of the least as far as pedigree, education and wealth.
Through the centuries God has time and again chosen the base and despicable things to confound the high and mighty. I don't believe for one second that Jesus drove around the countryside in a fancy camel or stayed in $500 per night luxury hotels. I believe Jesus there was nothing 'flashy' about Jesus.
How could Jesus be thoroughly acquainted with our state if He were not entirely one of us? If Jesus was a wealthy aristocrat than He would be unable to be the Savior of the common man. I believe that Jesus wore ordinary clothes and despite His deity, He was as most men were in His time.
Jesus could have scoffed at the very idea of being so humiliated as to wear the attire of all around Him. He could have claimed royal attire as the King of Heaven. But, Jesus emptied Himself and took upon Himself the form of a servant and was born in the likeness of a man.
Jesus decided by the freedom of His will to obey God every moment of His life. Jesus conformed His will to the will of God and by His choice, he trusted God, looked to God and did as God said in every situation. Everything Jesus did, He did because He loved God desired only to do God's will.
May we daily look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, and pray that we can be more like Him and less like the world that spins more and more out of control daily. Truly our ability to walk in fellowship with God is tied to our willingness to look to Jesus as our complete Savior.
