Psalm 63; How to Enjoy Beautiful Fellowship With God |

From the time I first started reading the Bible; one particular Psalm has always been my "favorite". It has carried me through times of spiritual drought and formed my personal reason for living from the time I was 17 years old to the present. If I could only have one Psalm to read, memorize and know in my heart of hearts it would be Psalm 63.
"O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water".
How much do you long for time with your God? Are you willing to get up early just to spend time with Him? Do you thirst for God as you do on a hot summer's day? Do you so want to fellowship with your God that it is like being in a desert looking for one drop of water? The mind pictures here are awesome. David had no greater desire in his life than to spend time with his God. Psalm 63:1 has always been for me the greatest verse in the Bible describing the depths of love in a man's heart for his God.
"So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory.
Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.
Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips"
What other purpose do we have in this life that is greater than blessing our God? Can you honestly say that God's love and kindness is better than life itself? Our very reason for being alive is first and foremost to praise our God. The reason for waking up in the morning should be to praise God. The reason for doing everything in life should be to "bless God while we live". This whole "living for God thing" doesn't have to be complicated or hard to figure out. I love this Psalm for it keeps everything simple.
We live to bless the God who gave us a life worth living. We live to praise His Holy Name. Our greatest gift that we can give Him, is the love in our hearts and the praise on our lips from the moment we awake till the time we lay down to sleep.
"When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches.
Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me."
Honestly, how do you go to sleep at night? Do you watch some television and then go to bed with it on your mind? Do you play some computer game or read a worldly book and then turn off the light and go to sleep with that on your mind? I certainly hope and pray that you spend some quality time with your God before retiring for the day.
I can think of no two things more deeply engrained in my life than awaking to give praise to my God and spending anywhere from a few minutes to an hour talking over the day's events with my God at the close of the day. Is this an investment of time? Of course it is, for in giving to God the start and the end of each day I am giving Him at least two hours of my day. The Biblical tithe of TIME was a seventh. If we were really serious about our relationship with God, we would be giving to Him a minimum of three and one half hours of our life each day.
It takes time with God to develop the relationship pictured by the phrases; "in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice" and "my soul follows close behind You." These phrases indicate a depth of relationship unknown to but a few who are willing to commit the time to faithfully snuggle up to God and allow Him to protect and bless in the shadow of His wing. For any relationship to flourish it takes the very things David is sharing in this Psalm. It takes time, honesty and a willingness to open one's heart and SHARE.
"But those who seek my life, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
They shall fall by the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals.
But the king shall rejoice in God; everyone who swears by Him shall glory; but the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped."
These closing verses put this Psalm in its proper context. David wrote this Psalm while in the wilderness. He was probably there due to being relentlessly pursued by his enemies. While in the wilderness he took time to share the depth of his personal relationship with his God. He reminded us all how the most important things in this life are not how much money we make, how many kids we have, how big our church is, how our local sports team is doing, whether we gained or lost a pound the last day, who is reading or commenting on our blogs or when the next Brad Pitt movie comes out.
No, the most important thing in life is making sure to spend all the time it takes for you to tell God how much you love Him and how thankful you are that He loves you. The most important thing in this life is spending however much time it takes to meditate upon your God in the night watches so that you know He is there protecting you and He knows your life belongs to Him.
Then, and only then, with a heart totally in love with God and a mind totally at rest in God; will the assurance be there that no enemy can harm you. Then faith will arise in your heart to more than conquer any situation that comes up. Then the confidence will swell up within your heart that your God will protect you with His right hand and your heart will go on singing and rejoicing in God. Psalm 63 truly is one of the greatest place in the Bible to see the simplicity of what it takes to have sweet, strong and loving fellowship with God.
