Running to serve not running away

When all of the fluff is blown away and the stark reality of a situation is exposed, that is when we are able to find out what a person is really made of and what kind of a person they really are. It has been said that cracks show up under pressure, and that is especially true when it comes to those virtues which separate the great believers from those simply playing along.

One can only imagine the shock those recruited by Jesus to be His disciples when the reality of what Jesus wanted of them was shown. Once those men found out that Jesus demanded such things as obedience, honesty and FAITH; they were thrust into situations where they could not hide in the shadows or pretend to be someone they weren't.

It is very easy to simply be a part of a large congregation, attend worship services weekly, make offerings and perhaps even attend a prayer meeting. When it becomes hard is when situations arise that demand sacrifice, out of the ordinary giving and the depth of compassionate care. The pressurized situations arising from need separate the REAL believers from the rest.

Have you ever noticed the different reactions people have when confronted with an emergency or crisis in their family or with a friend? Some people drop everything and do anything to help. These people are like the wonderful saints who show up at the home of someone who just passed away with food and other necessities to handle the incoming mourners. Thank God there are some whose reaction to a crisis is to jump in with both feet to help in any way they can.

There are others who voice their willingness to help and SAY they will do this and do that but rarely do much of anything. Unfortunately, these people are trapped by their own fears or lack of discipline. The will to help is there but the ability to actually do it is not.

Then there are those who seem to vaporize the minute a crisis hits. They can be your bestest buddy one day and then when you need a best buddy, they cannot be found. They don't pick up their phones, email or do anything. Their attitude is one of non-involvement due to wanting to not interrupt their precious schedule or resources intended for self pleasure.

At the very root of Christian service is the desire and willingness to run to serve. Isn't it interesting that a vital part of the training Jesus provided for His disciples involved service? Jesus initially had the disciples feed the multitudes and other chores normally associated with low level servants.

Jesus said that he who is first among you must be the greatest servant. Jesus got down on his knees and washed the feet of his disciples the night of the last supper. Jesus was willing to do whatever it took to help someone, irrespective of personal cost or sacrifice. Jesus manifested the love we all should strive to emulate through our willingness to forget ourselves and selflessly give of all we have and are to help those in far greater need than we.

You can say that again! This has been a thesis of many of my blogs here and articles I've written for a Christian publication. And as of late, videos here on CB that address those very issues when it comes to those that call themselves "Christians" considering CB receives a lot of results from other search bots. The use of videos comes as a result of the adage, "Actions speak louder than words". Prayerfully it might lead to a wake up call or two...whatever the LORD deems. I'm just obeying.

At least that is as Jesus (as you reiterated), taught by word and example. Truly it 'should be' the very root of all Christian service...not just here on CB or when someone is observing. It should be the root nature of every brother and sister.

Yet, we as believers cannot use this same hypothesis to peer into the lost souls of others who have not come to Christ. That is where our discipleship is really tested. Because we are in our comfort zone of being in the 'in crowd', do we turn the other cheek to look away and not get involved? To not help through the Love of Christ that we are to be - to demonstrate by example of what true commitment is.

Perhaps that's why recent statistics show the % of Christians is decreasing in the U.S.??? Because those who are to be the example of Christ aren't making a very good example at all.

Quoting from your blog:

How true, pathetic and scary in developing the believers and disciples of the future!

As for believers as a whole, there is one word that applies to how they react when the going gets tough - INTEGRITY. If it is not in their nature, they will 'get going' when that going gets tough. It's easy for a lot of people to rise to the occasion when it's someone they want to impress or a real friend...but as you mentioned and as I say, 'Show me how someone acts under pressure and I'll show you their true nature.'

It is truly a sinful shame to say that I have witnessed more compassion and integrity from many non-believers in these times. Even sadder when someone pays big money to have a billboard put up along the Interstate that I have a picture of that reads, "It's Not God I'm Against...It's His Fan Club!"

Service comes at a price, sometimes a sacrifice.

Human nature causes us to discriminate whom we will serve - those who love us, those who are our friends, those who we think need our help within the scope of our ability or by the grace and love of the Lord to sacrifice even for those who are none of the categories mentioned but whom the Lord has called us to serve because He loves them too.

Sometimes we do not help physically because we cannot help everybody and trust God to provide help to those - and then we pray for them because God's help would be better in those situations we are limited by time, space, know-how and resources.

When we help or pray, may it be with a heart of God's love and care and not for show.

My comment got way too long so I'll save it for a blog. However, I wanted to say that as a person who has had two life-threatening illnesses within two years, I know there is a lot of guilt involved. At one point or another, we will blame ourselves for being ill and creating a crisis for our loved ones. Perhaps this is why I get so outspoken about Christians looking for reasons to explain why someone gets cancer, heart disease or has a stroke. The enemy blames us enough, thank you very much!

If you simply say things like "Let me know if I can help" you probably will never hear anything. We don't know what you are able to do, want to do, etc. That is the truth. You have to understand that the last thing people/families dealing with life-threatening illness want to do is inconvenience anyone. They are hurting so much...they don't have the time or energy to tell you what to do. They really don't.

Perhaps a better way is to ask God to help you know what you can do... and then at least be able to be more specific about what you'd love to do for them. Which one of these sounds more sincere in their desire to help?

"Let me know if I can do anything." or "I would love to bring your family a meal. What day and time would be best?"

See the difference? Which would you be more likely to respond to?

Blessings!
