The Joy Which is Set Before Us
Posted By: blessings2you

"For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven,

If indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked.

For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.

Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee,

So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord.

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord."

2 Corinthians 5:1-8

The battle line between carnal Christianity and spiritual Christianity is drawn in these verses. Either our Christian faith is only for the here and now or this life is but a brief visit on our journey to an eternity with Christ. There are many analogies brought up in these verses, but they all are speaking to the same basic thing; our desire to shed this earthly body and receive our new one which implies being with the Lord.

Perhaps some of you have earthly bodies which cooperate with you. Mine seems to offend me daily. I live each day with pain along with numerous other physical issues. Even on days the body cooperates then the pressures of life seem to take over with their demands that bills be paid, cars be fixed and huge tree limbs blown down in the yard be cut up and hauled off. In the words of Eeyore, "oh bother" seems to describe this life at times.

Certainly Paul went through more physical abuse than I could ever conceive going through in ten lifetimes. Reading his account of hardships recorded in 2 Corinthians 11 makes my body hurt just thinking about them. There is no way he could have endured the whippings, beatings and stoning if he did not totally believe in the verses we read above. Plus, Paul had a "secret weapon" which God had provided him soon after he became a Christian. I am quite sure Paul used this weapon to carry him through the most difficult times he faced.

Paul's "secret weapon" was the vision he received as recorded in 2 Corinthians 12:1-6. This amazing vision is the very thing that gave him the strength to endure torture, physical abuse and mental pressures. Interestingly, Paul received this vision 14 years before he was writing the Corinthians, which means it was during the many years of obscurity when Paul lived in Tarsus.

After Paul's conversion, he did not immediately go out and start winning Gentiles to the Lord. He spent time in Damascus, the desert and Jerusalem. He ended up in Tarsus where he lived quietly being trained by the Lord for his future ministry for about TEN YEARS. Paul had much to learn and much to unlearn as well. He did not start his ministry until the Lord said he was ready, even if it took TEN YEARS.

God gave Paul the secret weapon of a personal vision of things to come which are not recorded in the Bible anywhere. We do not know the details of what Paul was shown, but whatever it was, it pretty much literally "blew his mind". Whatever Paul saw enabled him to write sections such as Romans 8:18:

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us."

Whatever is coming, the glory to be revealed in us, is so incredible it will make our worst nightmares in this life seem like a day in the park. Whatever God showed Paul about the future truly made it possible for him to endure any persecution or tribulation that came his way.

Paul was not the only one to have a "secret weapon". Jesus had one too which allowed him to endure the sufferings he went through. In Hebrews 12:2 it says:

"Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Whatever the "joy which was set before Him" was, it gave him the inner strength to endure the cross and all the suffering which went before it. Obviously God His Father set before the Son something which produced more joy than the pain he was going through. WOW, whatever it was, it was awesome!

Even though we have not been given the vision Paul received or whatever was set before Jesus that produced joy in the midst of intense suffering; we have been given glimpses of what lies ahead. Whether Old Testament prophecies of the upcoming glory of Israel, accounts given by Jesus during His ministry or great insight given by Paul, Peter, Jude, James and John; we have enough at our disposal to live for then not for now.

Sooner or later our body breaks down, our strength betrays us, our minds grow weak and our once noble dreams lay broken on the floor. As the intense bonfire of youth becomes the gentle campfire of middle age and finally the flickering candlelight of old age; we learn that to keep going takes living for something far bigger than ourselves and using a strength far greater than our own. We learn that we must keep our eyes squarely on what lies ahead or we find ourselves spending most of our time re-living the past.

We do have so much to look forward to that one could not possibly begin to discuss it all in one short post. Therefore, I am resolved to return again to mainly writing about what lies ahead instead of rehashing what came before. I am resolved to devote more and more of my mental energies to preparing for all that is to shortly come to pass, while leaving what has been securely in the past. With everything within me, I pray the Lord comes soon. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Your post brought these scriptures to my mind: 1 Peter 1:3-25
[3]Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [4]To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, [5]Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. [6]Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: [7]That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: [8]Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: [9]Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. [10]Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: [11]Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. [12]Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. [13]Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; [14]As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: [15]But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; [16]Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. [17]And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: [18]Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; [19]But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: [20]Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, [21]Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. [22]Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: [23]Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. [24]For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: [25]But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

The best is yet to be!
