Blog Reading Queue

Greetings Everybody,

Earlier this week we received a rather interesting feature suggestion that peaked our interest enough to see if it could be developed.

The idea behind the feature suggestion was to create a "queue" (of sort) that would allow our members to quickly add blogs to a queue that could than be read at any time. In essence, a way of quickly adding blogs to a queue so that the person could continue on viewing other blogs without stopping to take the time to read in detail a given blog. At least, that is how we understood the feature suggestion.

After a bit of work and some brain-storming we have come up with a method to do this.

We are calling it the "Blog Queue" and it is available right now to all Pledge Partners.

We have attempted to integrate it into a system similar to our existing "account alerts" - located at the top of the website. When you add a blog to your queue it will show that you have one (or many) in your queue. By including it into the top of our website you can quickly access any blog in your queue at any time.

Now, we realize that we already have a "tracking system" called the "Tracker and we could have just as well as used it. But, we realized that the Tracker is a long-term system for tracking blogs, whereas our new "queue" is something that should be used for short-term purposes. Ideally for a single login-period, or a day or two at the most.

Because we have tightly integrated this into our top-navigation system we are going to be placing a limit of ten (10) blogs that you can have in your queue at any time. The reason for this is that for every single page that you visit, we have to process the list of blogs into the html (code) of the website, and that causes additional load-time. As a fairly good percentage of our members do not have high-speed internet, we like to try to keep the website loading as fast as possible.

How It Works:

Here are a few screenshots of how this system looks/works:

When you are viewing a blog you will notice a new area on the right-side navigation (hopefully at the very top of the right-side-navigation area) which looks like this:

If you click on the link that says "Add to Blog Queue" the blog will be added to your queue and then it should look like this:

At that point you should see that within the top-navigation area your "queue" should increase by one.

In this screenshot, we have two blogs added to our Blog Queue:

If you would like to see a full-size screenshot of how this looks click here

This screenshot shows how the list looks in full detail:

You can click the subject of the blog to visit the blog (which will also remove the blog from your queue!)

You can click the little green-arrow to also visit the blog.

You can click the little red-x to have the blog removed from your queue.

On the (logged in) home page of our website where the blog listings are displayed, you will now see a little green plus-sign on the top-right of each blog. You can also click on that to have the blog added to your queue.

That should make it super easy to add new blogs that you would like to read at a later time, but not forget to read!

Future Development:

Now, we just already hear peoples brain churning away about how this feature would be "sooo cool" to have integrated into the CB Groups, or into the Discussions, or into Private Messages, or such.

However, at this time, we have zero intent of plugging this system into other aspects of our website. Yes, that is zero... nadda... zilch... zipp... none!

Pledge Partnership Required:

Like many other features of our website Services, we are going to be requiring that you be a Pledge Partner in order to access this feature.

This is one of those features that is "above and beyond" simply "blogging" and goes more into the "advanced services" - so it rightfully belongs within the Services that are available to our Pledge Partners.

In Closing:

We hope our Pledge Partners enjoy this new feature!

We look forward to any feedback we receive.

We thank @metamorphosis for the suggestion and @kreynolds+ for further input on this idea.

Many Blessings,

I really love this idea! There are times when health issues prevent me from giving blogs the amount of time they deserve. This will enable me to come back to them when I log on again after the 'fog' has cleared. Thank you to all who brought forth this wonderful idea!

That is a great idea. Sometimes I am just too tired to read a blog completely at one viewing. Now I can save it and read it more thoroughly later.

Brother John, thanks for this great feature.

This is what I got:
Fatal error: Cannot use string offset as an array in /home/christianblog/public_html/_plugs/blogqueue.php on line 52
Blessings always

Do you remember which blog you where trying to add to your queue when you got that message ?

If I remember correctly, one blog is ptl2008, the other one I cannot remember. But it should be around 10 to 11 am in Singapore, so about 11pm last night in USA.

Will that help?

Doesn't really help... but, that is ok

What I have done is add an extra bit of code into the software to try to check to make sure that does not happen.

If you (or anybody else) continue to have this issue, please submit a bug report about it.

Thanks,
John

the Queue (#) does not show up when using the Firefox browser, it does show up using Explorer. I added it to the Bugs

There is now a "purge queue" option for those who have a bunch of blogs in their queue and decide they do not want to read them. It will be within the dropdown list, on the far top-right. I got tired of visiting a bunch of blogs I had already read, yet had added to my queue to test and make sure things where ok... lol... so, I added this feature to save me some time/trouble. doubt most will need it, but, i'll be there for those times when you do.

Nope, I added blogs and the Notification confirmed the add "blog has been added to your blog queue", but still nothing at the top of the page next to the Chatroom (0) text. I am using Version 3.6.3

I also have Firefox and there is no trace of the queue. Evidently Firefox has an issue with this queue business. I am praying it gets fixed for the idea sounds wonderful.

Hmm... I have Firefox 3.6.3 and it shows up perfectly. I just added one to the queue and at the top of the page it changed from (0) to (1)... of course... I uh... use a Mac

  @greybear ,

I just checked this in Firefox 3.6.3 and can confirm it is working on my end.

I also checked this in IE8.

I also checked this in Safari for Windows.

All three are showing the "queue (x)" at the top.

Maybe it's a time-delay issue. (shrugs-have-no-idea) I have just decreased the re-load-time from 8.5 seconds to 1.5 seconds. This is the time that the website waits to refresh the "x" total and the list of blogs. Doing this will cause a bit more load on the server, but, at least we can see if that is the issue. So, please let me know ASAP.

Thanks,
John

  @abelajohnb+ (John Abela) ,

I just checked this for Safari for Macs and it works in that as well as Firefox for Macs.

I really like this new feature. I often just get onto Christianblog for a few minutes at a time and with this feature I can better keep track of current blogs. I can put blogs into my queue to read later rather than having to search through the recently published blogs when I am ready to take some time to read and comment on others blogs. Thanks so much. revgenlink

I think it is great, John. So very convenient. I haven't tried it in Google Chrome, yet. Many thanks again to you, for using your skills, to give us all these extras.

It seems that under the FireFox browser, if you have installed the "AdBlock Plus" add-on/extension, it considers aspects of the ChristianBlog.Com to be advertisement when it is not.

This is easy enough to fix:

When you are on ChristianBlog.Com and you have AdBlock Plus running, right-click on the AdBlock icon and there should be an option listed that says "disable on christianblog.com". Click on that, and this issue should be resolved for you.

Thanks,
John
