Website Redesign Progress

Greetings Everybody,

I felt it was time to publish a blog detailing the progress of our website redesign.

I started this process a week or so ago and held off on any major progress updates as we were not sure if we would keep the new design we are working on and/or if the CB community would not like it.

As I have not had any complaints about it, and we are tending to like it in-house, I decided now as as good of time as any to publish a blog with the updates I have made to get the entire website migrated over to this new design.

As I have been open to hearing public feedback for the last week or so and have not received any negative comments about it - I am not going to hear any from here out (ok, I mean that as a joke... but at the same time, I'm not going to stop using this template at this point because of late complaints... but you are welcome to start complaining if it fits your needs )

I sort of got delayed with the update of the Blog System update for a week but now that I am back on track with normal things, the migration to this new template should go fairly fast.

Please also note that I am taking this opportunity to fix known bugs, add a few additional features, remove a few features nobody ever uses, increase overall site security and privacy, and all those things that come with a major change such as this.

I would like to say that I am doing this template update according to some methodological progression... but the truth is... I am not... so please do not exact everything to be perfectly in it's place and in order.

I will update throughout the day, or at the end of each day, as I make progress throughout the entire website during this change to our new template.

For those of you wondering, I am calling this new template: "Rejoice"

No particular reason... it was just what came to mind when I started it

Many Blessings,
John B. Abela

Hello All,

Thank you everybody for the wonderful comments and feedback.

Today I will be working on migrating the Open Discussions over to the new template.

If that goes well and I get it all done, I will move onto the Prayer Requests and Praise Reports.

btw, I forgot to announce yesterday that the Private Messages has been updated to the Rejoice Template.

Also, for you bbcode users out there who have been using the "internallink" method and get tired of typing that long bbcode... trying using "link"... it does the same thing

Blessings,
John

Hello All,

I have now completed the update of the Friends/Contacts feature to the new Rejoice template.

I have also added a link to the profile page, so if you are viewing a friends profile you can now quickly add/update your private notes about your friend/contact without having to dig through your friends list. I realize almost nobody out there uses the private notes feature, but for those of you that do, hopefully this will help speed things up for you.

I have also gotten the "Blog Comment Preview" page updated to using the new template. That was seriously annoying me... so now when you are submitting/previewing a blog comment it will use the new template. Oh, and btw... I now have the pretty BBCode/Smilies on the Blog Comment Preview page. It will take me a bit of work to get that working on the main blog page... it's on my to-do-list.

Blessings,
John

Hello All,

As of just now I have completed the entire Gallery system over to the new Rejoice Template.

I have also re-added the ability for Premier/Gold Members to be able to remove Blog Comments from within their Published Blog Entries. As before you will be required to provide a reason - which will be reviewed post-removal by ChristianBlog.Com - and, as before, the comment author will receive a canned private message letting them know you removed their Blog Comment. Should there not be any outstanding issues with the new code I wrote for this feature, I will work on getting the ability to remove Blog Replies as well - a feature we have not had before.

The only major section of the website not yet transitioned over to the new Rejoice Template (unless I have missed one) is the massive CB Groups. So, it is up next but first I need to take a break and think about some things. There are a lot of bugs within the CB Groups and I want to try to fix them as I transition the CB Groups system over to the new Rejoice Template. The CB Groups is (sigh) the largest section of our website on a total page and code level due to the (CB Group Owner) management system within the CB Groups section. In fact, the entire CB Groups part of the ChristianBlog.Com website is larger than 90% of the rest of the website put together. It really is massive. Expect it to take me awhile to finish up the CB Groups transitioned over to the new Rejoice Template and get all the bugs fixed. I am about as excited to start this massive work-load ahead of me as I would be excited about jumping out of a plane with no parachute.

Blessings,
John

Second update for today...

I went ahead and finished up a lot more of the CB Groups section tonight.

The only thing not updated to the new Rejoice Template is the "Create a CB Group" and the "CB Group Owner Management" system.

I will let everybody know once I have finished those two sections.

Now... now I could really use some help!!

This website is just so big these days that I have trouble keeping up with what I have done and what I have not done...

So if you find a page of our website that is NOT using the new Rejoice Template... PLEASE... post a reply to this comment letting me know exactly what the page is so I can get it converted over!

Thanks!
John

Hello All,

As of tonight I have finished up the template change for the CB Groups section as well as the Personal Contact Information system for those of you who have access to it.

Unless I am mistaken, the only thing that is left is the registration system and the signin assistance pages. Once they are finished (unless I have missed something) than the entire mammoth process should be completed.

Thanks,
John

Second update for today...

I have now completed the registration system and the sign in assistance pages.

So, unless I have missed a page (or a lot of them) the transition to the new "Rejoice" template is now completed!

This process was started on January 19th...

It is now January 31st...

So if my math is correct that means I completed an entire website redesign in 12 days.

I think that is a new record for me - lol - as my last attempt to change the design of ChristianBlog.Com never actually got finished - giggle/oops.

As I mentioned when I got started... I could really use some additional financial support to help keep the christianblog.com ministry going - please consider becoming a pledge partner if you have not already become one! By doing so you will help me keep ChristianBlog.Com online and you will get some great additional benefits! Just head over to our Pledge Partner page and become a Pledge Partner! Without us reaching our goal I am not sure how much longer I can keep ChristianBlog.Com operational. I know times are tough for everybody, including me, but for me ChristianBlog.Com is my full-time job... the amount you see under the "Achieved" is how much I am making. Obviously at this point that is nowhere near enough for a person to survive in paying his bills. I kinda really need some help here folks...

Many blessings,

I don't know where to put this but it won't let me publish blogs it says something about "Missing Required Field: Allow public blog comments" I don't know what that means and didn't see an option for that. Thanks for all your work! =]
