Tracts Re-Visited: More Effective and Easier

When I was a kid I read a few evangelistic tracts. I prayed the prayer on the back. I expected lighting or something cool! It was written it such way that I was sure of something miraculous. But...nothing!

I hear of people dropping tracts in McDonald bathrooms or leaving them at restaurants. I get it.

I think I am like others. I question their effectiveness but I am excited when someone wants to do it. They want to reach people and that is good. It is cool and needs to be encouraged.

I have heard of people “accepting” Jesus by a tract. From there they went to church and the rest is history. Of course this isn’t typical but at minimum it gets people to think. Trusting Jesus is a process for most. They are introduced to the concepts of Heaven, Hell and forgiveness. Excellent!

But we can do better. We need to revise how we do it and what to expect.

I was in Wisconsin a few weeks ago to support Scott Walker in the recall election. We were at a rally with 4,000 people. A man was giving out tracts as we left the event. He boldly invited people to follow Jesus. There were a lot of Christians there and many sympathetic to Christians. But everyone flowed around him like water around a rock in a stream. I’m sure this was disappointing.

His message was typical. Confess you are a sinner, accept His sacrifice on the cross for the forgiveness of sin, read your Bible and go to a Bible believing church...etc.

He left with a lot of tracts, possibly disappointed. He may have thought people are resistant to Jesus.

It doesn’t have to go this way.

He needs to understand his culture. There are flyers people will receive and others they will reject. He needs to study what people will take and avoid.

At this event there were a lot of patriots. These people are pro-America. They love this country. So he could have made a tract with a flag on the front. He could have said “God bless America” and hand it to people. They would have received them gladly and he would have given out all his tracts.

Also the message needed to be reformed. But how?

He needs to know what his goal was. Was it to get one person saved? Was it to inform people?

I think a reasonable goal would be to inform individuals of their need for Jesus. Maybe some would get saved but given this is generally a process it is unlikely.

The message needs to be designed for the audience. Are you at a biker conference or a Little League baseball field? The design and message can be tailored for those people. If it is a motorcycle conference it should have a biker or Harley on the front of the tract. If it is a Little League game it may have a kid playing ball with his dad on the front.

Then to hand it out you need to say something suited for the event. It may take a couple of tries to figure it out. To a biker you might hand it to them and say “Hey check this bike out!” or “Do you ride a Harley!” At the game you can say “Support the kids!” You won’t have a problem giving out the tract.

Now that it is in their hand, what should it say? We bridge from the event-Harleys or Little League-to the message we want to send. For example if it is a group of bikers the bridge might look like the following:

“The Harley represents freedom, no helmet just you and miles of road. This freedom is preserved by people that have learned the more we take responsibility for ourselves and care for others, the less we need law to regulate our lives. Absolute freedom comes only when you and others continue to do what is right. In the life of Jesus we find He gave up His life for the freedom of others. This is it! We must do as He has done to be free. Read His words in the Bible and act them out. You will truly ride free.”

This is unpolished but you get the idea. It is short and we bridge from their interest and values to the importance of Jesus.
I recently gave out 120 tracts in five minutes with four friends. We went to the 4th of July parade in our town. It worked perfectly. No one resisted receiving our tracts and we encouraged 120 people to obey Jesus in a culturally appropriate way. Easy breezy!

These tracts are cool, fit culturally, are easy to give out, short and easy to read, and we communicate an essential truth. Try it with some friends. It is very satisfying! Then write a blog on how it went.

Good post and so true on cultural relevance. I just had someone ask me how to approach a visiting neighbor. She went to AA and in the last several years came into faith in God. She was going to christian meditations through a denominational church. My sense was that she did not know Jesus Christ, but believed she did. The wisdom I had was for my friend to approach her about spirituality (her interest) and share her experiences in and with Christ, thus presenting an invitation into true spirituality.

Unfortunately many with the burden and desire for street witnessing are not capable of making flyers or creative in writing. They need others to step in and help so their street witnessing will be more effective. - Barb

About people not having the skills to put one together is fine. This how the body works together. Find someone who will write it.

If they follow these guidelines the can be successful.

Thanks

Brother Clifrad, yes I know what you are talking about. I have been given out tracts in street evangelism in my country for the last 2 years. It had never dawned on me to do them until 2 years ago when I felt the urge and the passion to do them. The rest is history.

The Lord has supplied all my needs for this street evangelism and has given me many tracts and Daily Bread in many different languages for the people that I meet in my country are many foreign workers of Asia. So I have tracts in many languages like Indonesian, Indian ( Mainly Tamil), Talagog for the Filipinos, Chinese tracts and Bibles for the Mainland Chinese , in Thai, Myanmese, in Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean , in Bangladeshi and of course in English.

I have pleasantly surprised that many of those that I give to them have not heard about Jesus and many accepted the tracts gladly. I believe the way to salvation is a 3 stage process. Someone does the sowing like street evangelism, someone helps the growth as the Holy Spirit guides, and someone will do the reaping of that soul in God's time.

Sadly I also have received remarks from Christians who tell me bluntly that giving tracts on the street and in the shopping centres are like peddling Jesus.

But I find it strange because I do not ask for any money for all these tracts. In fact I give out Bibles in many who are interested, in Chinese, in English, in Indonesian, in Myanmase and in Talalog. I usually financed this ministry myself and I do them alone as there is none beside me who is interested.

However whatever other may say or speak badly about tracting, I know that the Lord has impressed me to do this ministry. Recently I have the opportunity to travel to Bangkok and I can give away some tracts to 3 who have not even heard about Him. I only wish that I have brought more Thai tracts for there have been many opportunities to give to some Thai people. I surely learn from this experience.

May the Lord raise and bring more labourers for the harvest for time is short .

Thanks for sharing

Blessings always

Thank you Hwa for your faithful ministry. I am sure many who are lost and looking for more are receiving from your work. A few years ago God spoke a word to me (and I am ministering in a very religious environment). He said "those you are looking for are buried and you will not recognize them". I have since cried out for those whose hearts are searching (but unseen) to be brought forth in Him (connected to those who can bring the light and truth that they need), both to me and to others.

I pray a blessing on all you do and on you personally. May God pour a fresh rain and anointing from His throne upon you.

Blessings,
Barb

Sister Barb, thanks for the encouragement. Do pray for me for I do have pyhsical weakness and have felt tired mentally sometimes.

May the Lord continue to grant me this passion so that I will do what He desires me to do.

Thanks and blessings

Remember giving them out at a youth camping trip. They were a lot more comfortable doing that. And the seventh day bunch gave theirs out at all the promise-keepers gatherings. And I have seen them in the bathroom stalls, at various places.

God Bless.

I admire any who would hand out tracts. You are so right about appealing to whom you expect to receive them. My late husband and I had been at motorcycle rally and a group of rowdy looking guys rode past with jackets that read "riders for the son". In the tents later that day, I was happy to take their tracts and one of the little travel bibles they gave away, as did many other "riders". Later in the summer, while visiting relatives in a small town, someone left an entire shopping bag of tracts in our back seat. Living in Manhattan, I can tell you it would be a huge effort to hand just one person a tract. Sadly they ended up in the garbage. The pencils, which were included, were a better choice, but nothing beat those Son Riders. We were already believers, but they did inspire us to go from an Italian cafe racer to a Harley. jd
