Should a Christian be concerned whether we live in a capitalist or a socialist country?
Firstly please allow me to define 'Capitalism' and 'socialism' according to the Oxford English dictionary.
Capitalism:
An economic and political system in which a country s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
Socialism:
a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.
As we may or may not know the western world (predominantly stating) is governed under
capitalist ideals.
Now in current days more and more companies are asking their governments to 'bail them out' financially, due to the financial climate. Note worthy companies such as;
*Ford (manufacturing car industry) Co-owned by the US government.
*RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) Co-owned by the UK government. Estimated ownership 90% in favour of the UK government.
*GM (manufacturing car industry) 100% ownership in favour of the US government.
So is there a need to fear a change (arguably) from capitalist to socialist?
Having studied these two concepts (capitalism and socialism) I can safely say I do not fear (an apparent shift from) capitalism to socialism, as there are pros and cons to both.
In fact I can vividly remember our history teacher asking us students why is capitalism better then socialism (my teacher at that time was clearly in favour of capitalism).
I hesitantly raised my arm and asked the teacher But, sir... shouldn't you be asking the question the other way around ? As it happened I was asked to leave the classroom.
Socialism brings about great ideals, namely:
*The NHS (The British government established National Health Service where medical treatment is free/paid for by taxes no matter the severity of medical condition).
*Fire service
*Police service
*Etc.
I am very interested to hear from fellow Christians. I have heard theories such as the end of the world, as we know it! To... the beginning of the end.
Be that as it may... what do think?
P.S
I live in London.
