The old testaments quote over and over again in several books that tithing was instituted as wages for the priests. The priests were ordained only from the tribe of Levites and were not allowed to work with their hands to earn money, so their job was to look after the rituals and practices of the temple. The tithe meaning one tenth, was later added to the law and Jewish ordinances , in another word a must for the people of the land of Israel. The book of 1kings 12v16 talks about money as sin and trespass offering which the priests took to offer as animal sacrifice on behalf of the people. Jesus was that ultimate sacrifice and thus fulfilled the old testament laws including the law of tithing. Hebrews 7 talks clearly about levites who receive the priesthood have a commandment to receive tithes from the people under the law. Conversely in the New Testament there are a plethora of scriptures abolishing the rituals of tithing. 1cor15v20-23 Christ has risen form the dead and has become the first fruit, thus we are no longer under the law, but grace. The temple no longer exists as a building. We are the temple of God.
