Christian Rock music

I attend a Baptist school that believes all rock music is bad whether it has Christian lyrics or not. My church, on the other hand, believes the opposite. I listen to contemporary Christian music, Christian hard rock, Christian rap, and any other kind of Christian music. Lately, I have been struggling with this issue. I don't know how much "rock" is too much. I don't like the screaming music where you can't really understand what they are saying because it is impossible to be a good witness for Christ if no one can understand you. I also don't know about these bands that say they are Christian, but never sing about Christ or God. They don't sing anything bad, but nothing that could reach others for God. I really don't know what to think now. Please, if anyone has any opinions, advice, or comments on this issue, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
In Christ,
Elizabeth

Liz,

Music was a tough hurdle for me. I stuck close to the contemporary "praise & worship" songs until I worked at a boys home. I had read in "Purpose Driven Life" that music is neither christian or not. It's the message in the lyrics that brings glory to God or not. That said, I now have a wide variety of music which all bring glory to God in their message.

The trick with the younger "louder" music is that if the kids aren't listening to the message in the lyrics and only the music, then the song has lost it's purpose. I also believe that whether loud or soft, new or old, the group/person singing/playing needs to take every opportunity to share the salvation message.

I saw Skillet in concert once and was very disappointed that they never stopped and shared the gospel Good News of Christ. My boys from the home said they were the best band, but couldn't remember a single line from a single song. Just that they "rocked". Not a message at all in my book, if the objective is to reach the lost they didn't do it.

That's my take on the music end of it.

In Christ,

Thankyou for all of your comments.
One thing:
My comment about my school thinking that all rock and contemporary music is bad was not meant to say that my school is bad, just in case anyone thought that's what I meant. I realized that I may have said that in a way that could imply things I didn't mean. I really love my school even though they believe some things differently than me.
Thanks again for all the comments! I appreciate it!
In Christ,
Liz

Liz,

Music has always been one of my greatest loves in life. I find that, if I listen to the right kind of music for me, then I become closer to God. One of my favorites is Jeremy Camp. Not sure if you've heard him, but he's awesome ... and his messages are clearly understood and Christ-focused. I've also enjoyed listening to Kutless as well, but Jeremy Camp is, by far, still my current favorite.

Good luck & God Bless!!

I love Contemporary Christian Music! There are also Hymns that I like. I don't care for Rap, so I don't listen to Christian Rap. Before I became a Christian, I listened to Rock, Hard Rock and Metal. I don't care for the sound of Hard Rock or Metal anymore...(now that I'm over 40[]) So I don't listen to the Christian versions either. I hardly ever listen to Classic Rock anymore, I pay attention to the lyrics and find I don't want to be proclaiming the words that are in the songs I used to listen to in the 70's and 80's.

If Christian Rock is bringing you into a closer relationship with Jesus, that's a good thing. If it's leaving an open door for you to listen to similar music that has a message that is against God... then I'd let it go.

I think that's the test. Is what you're putting into your head inspiring you? Uplifting you?
Is it okay to listen to music that isn't 'Christian' or by 'Christian' bands that don't mention Jesus in the lyrics... In my humble opinion, I say yes. I read books other than my Bible, newspapers, watch TV and go to movies. I stay away from anything that bashes God, Jesus or Christianity (choices are sometimes slim!)

This comment is five months after your post...I'd love to know how this area of your life has been working out. I read your other posts on music... congrats on the band and I love Kutless also.
Also praying that you'll be rid of that cold soon (9-2-06).

Well for me I do see why alot of baptist church's are againist christian rock ,rap,, I have had alot of people tell me that Christian rap is evil...and all these people are OLDER folks. none of them are younger folks like me (age 25), I see nothing wrong with Christian rock or rap, I listen as you can see to LECRAE, ya should check him out. I believe in My heart he is Sincere, Cause of the messages he brings in his lyrics. I like alot of christian rap, some rock(not hard stuff), Alot of CC & worship & Southern Gospel, I just went to the National Quartet Convention last night in Louisville, KY, And if 90% of those people knew what Music I listen to, They would consider me a Sinner and Probaly evil, But thats their belief and Im not sorry to say this, Their is gonna be some Christian rappers in heaven(I hope all are Sincere). and Heaven is gonna be a Joyful Stompin time I know a few people that Have heard christian rap, One is my dad and he is evangelist and He saids long as they are Sincere, It's alright. He thinks its ok, but its hard for him to understand the lyrics..lol But hey If they are Sincere and Ya feel they are in your heart, Turn it on UP

And if your baptist,Sorry if I offended you., there is baptist churchs that believe it's ok to listen to all Music as long as its CHRISTIAN. And im sure there is some older folks that listen to it.

Flyleaf is a great Christian band. Paper Tongues is touring with them. Both bands are amazing.

Flyleaf is offering extra music to people who pre- order their new album, Memento Mori on i-Tunes.

Check it out on i-Tunes

Hi Liz,
Here's my two cents: the Bible says to make a joyful noise unto the Lord, and people have greatly differing preferences. For some people rock music, metal music, classical music--or really any kind of music--is joyful to them and helps them connect with God on a unique level. When it comes to bands that are Christian, but not have overtly Christian lyrics, then benefit is that people who are fond of secular music will listen to it and see them live. Many times these bands will talk about God at concerts. Another benefit is that someone may bridge over into bands that do have overtly Christian lyrics. Anyway, as far as you listening to the music goes, do what you feel God is saying is right for you. I do not think it is the style of music that makes something pleasing to God, but rather the lyrics, what is meant by them, and how the listening experience as a whole is affecting the person's relationship with God. After all, if you listen to hymns all day, but don't take time to work on your personal relationship with God, then the hymns are negatively affecting you!
