Are We Created Beings or Evolved Creatures?
Have you had "the talk" with your child yet? No, I'm not speaking of the birds and the bees. Sooner or later children raised in Christian homes return from school asking, "Did man evolve from animals, or did God create him from the dust of the earth?" If you assure your little one that God was the creator of man, just the way it is written in the Bible, be prepared for more questions. "Why do my biology book and my school teacher say man evolved like all the other animals?"
Bookstores and libraries are full of books that can guide parents concerning what to say to children about sex, but I have yet to find a book with a satisfactory answer to why scientific evidence doesn't seem to agree with the story of Creation found in the Bible. Parents need truthful answers to questions like "Did man evolve from apes?" Your child depends on you for good advice and truthful information, so seek answers to these questions before you are asked.
The key to knowing how man came to be on this planet is to know exactly what it means to be "made in the image and after the likeness of God." As Christians, it is our awesome privilege and duty to believe in God's Word. God states in no uncertain terms that man was to be made in the image and after the likeness of God.
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepth upon the earth (Genesis 1:26).
Believing that man was made in the image and after the likeness of God requires a great deal of faith. After all, God is a spirit being and we are physical beings who are said to have a spirit, but we don't seem to have a strong family resemblance to God.
Preachers are fond of saying that men are spirit beings who have physical bodies. Personally, I believe them, but what I know for sure is that if I stub my toe it hurts me. My hurt toe is the physical me. If God stubbed His toe, would it hurt Him? Does God even have a toe? Surely He doesn't have a physical toe since God is a spirit being. So how would man, who is a physical being, have been made in the image and after the likeness of a spirit being?
There is another mystery concerning God's creation of man. It is written "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness... " Notice the words "us" and "our." God is only one God but three persons. There is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Since man was made in the image and after the likeness of God, man should also be a three-part spirit being. A common answer to this is that man is a spirit, he has a soul, and he lives in a physical body; but is spirit, soul, and body really an image and likeness of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit? It was the Holy Spirit from the Father that gave Mary the Holy Seed or Word, which became physical flesh (Jesus). Jesus was fully God and fully man. He was a newly created creature, who came from His eternal Father. Jesus was both eternal and new. Mary (a physical being) and the Father (a spirit being) created a being that was both physical and spiritual. He was fully man and fully God. Before Jesus became flesh, He was Word (John 1:1-2).
So you see, Word from God can be delivered by Spirit to create a new creature that is both spiritual and physical, and new and eternal. Jesus was first in His Father as Word and then He left His Father as spoken Word. Here on earth He became flesh or manifested Word. Jesus said that His words were spirit and life (John 6:63). So how could man, who is a physical being, have been made in the image and after the likeness of God, who is a spirit being?
Maybe Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden were created in the image and after the likeness of God and were spirit beings or living souls. Man, here on earth, was created in the image of man in the Garden of Eden (a spiritual place). When God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...," He spoke His Word, or His Son. "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul" (Genesis 2:7). The Word came from God and was God the Son. Within the Word was Spirit and Life. Spirit from the Word formed man's body from the dust of the earth, then life from the Word gave man the breath of life. Truly, man of the Garden of Eden was created in the image and after the likeness of God and was a spirit being or a living soul.
For this to be true, the Garden of Eden had to be a spiritual place, and the dust of the earth had to be energy that had been released from the grip of our physical universe and was able to go to a place between heaven and earth. Within the Garden of Eden was a talking serpent, naked people, magical trees, the voice of God walking in the cool of the day, cherubim, and a flaming sword. These are the types of things one would expect to see in a spirit place, not here in the physical world. A reasonable place for the Garden of Eden to be located would be in the spiritual world between heaven and physical earth. No wonder the Garden of Eden was never found on earth.
How did man become physical here on earth? Since man was made in the image and after the likeness of God, maybe God spoke them as a type of Word. Maybe they were planted within creatures in the same way that Jesus as Word was planted within Mary. If that were the case, man would be fully creature and fully man, which seems to be exactly what man is here on earth. We are the sons of man. If we open our hearts and our minds to search within Scripture for meaning of Scripture, we will learn that the physical body of man could indeed be a result of evolution. What your children are learning from their science books at school is not necessarily in direct controversy with the biblical story of Creation you have taught them. It is simply a one-sided version of the truth written with science, not faith, in mind. Our spirit being was created when God created Adam. Adam was a living soul, and souls are spirit beings.
God created man on Day Six as spiritual law substance, or an image of God's will. Then God used what He created on Day Six to create living soul man, whom He placed in a spiritual place called the Garden of Eden. After man was removed from the Garden of Eden, he was used by God to prepare early man to receive spiritual breath of life from God to become modern man.
Earlier in history, God had Adam bless the creatures with name spirit for the purpose of their adapting to their ever-changing environment, which caused them to evolve. Man's ancestors evolved to a point where their brains produced the quantity and quality of energy suitable for the human spirit, as Word from God, to start man's evolution process.
