Difference between Christian Religion and Christianity

Christian religion is one of my favorite and least favorite topics all rolled into one. I have another blog which I use sometimes, and lately it has turned into one rant after another about Christian religion. This is one reason I wanted another blog strictly for these topics.

Now Christian religion is not the same as Christianity and I suppose I need to explain the differences. Another name for Christian religion to me is legalism, which might clear the air up for some people.
Religion or legalism and Christianity both strive for a sin free life. Both understand sin is bad, and we should not sin. Both also understand that doing good things is good and we should be doing good things. However, both of these have completely different motivations for how to make people sin less, or not at all, and doing things which are good.

Christianity has since it's origin always had a problem of getting caught up in religion. Even Paul in many of his letters addressed this point, by referring to the law or other such things.

Christian Religion has not changed very much from the Old Testament, both are still trying to live with a list of rules, which in Colossians it even states God nailed these rules we failed to follow to the cross. The saddest part about all of this is non-Christians view us as the group of people who are just following a list of rules. And because of this sad point many people are staying away from true Christianity is droves.

We do not need Jesus or any God to just try harder to follow a list of rules. If your only motivation for being a Christian is because of morals then perhaps you need to rethink some things. I hate to break it to everyone but morals are not what is separating the "sheep and the goats".

To me real Christianity is about (this might sound crazy) but Christ. It's not about me, or anything I can do on my own. In fact I believe the greatest day in anybody's life is when they realize none of us are capable of doing anything good on our own. Without Christ we all screw up.

The big difference to me between religion and real Christianity is this. Religion tells me everything I can and should be doing for God. Christianity tells me what God did for me.
I suppose if I keep using this blog a lot of what I right will be rants about religion, and I just wanted to at least have some explanation for what I believe religion is.

Thank you for the support. I agree it is not an excuse to sin. The funny thing though is it seems like Grace is such an amazing thing people should be asking questions like this about "excuses to sin". Even Paul had to clarify these questions with Romans 6 and 7. I heard a preacher one time say something I liked. He said "You will live better on accident than you ever did on purpose". This means to me if we are walking closely with God, and because God is living in us then sin will not be an issue.

Great blog, I think that in this whole religiosity thing what is lost is the importance of relationship with Christ. The love that the Father has for us is so amazing and encompassing and so very simple that it's hard to deal with the guilt that we all feel at times because it is what it is! And all we have to do is accept and believe! And on the other side of that coin without a real revelation and desire to have a relationship with God, we will act in ways to please ourselves and ride roughshod over the grace He extends to us...

Exactly! The amazing thing about guilt too is that is usually occurs when we are misunderstanding something about our relationship with God, as a Christian we should not feel guilt, but how many Christians can say that?

Amen! The part about "Christianity" that drives me crazy is people just go to church and say I am a Christian, but there is not fruit and they are hypocrites. Why call yourself a Christian when you aren't even acting like Christ?
I like what you said here:

You are right. The saddest part to me about this is non-Christians also know we are hypocrites. I hear about it from them. The only thing I know how to say is you're right many Christians are. I am a server and if you don't think Christians' are hypocrites go out to eat after church and just watch how people are treating their server. It is terrible.

freeindeed87Quoting you:He said "You will live better on accident than you ever did on purpose". Sounds like my friend Andrew W. of Colorado Springs, know of him? Thanks,Colorado

Yes indeed, I know two people who went to his college. This is where the quote came from.

His ministry on Grace is the most Scriptural and powerful I know of right now in America. God has given him a real revelation on God's love and grace. Thanks for the answer, I love Andy.In Christ,Colorado

I like Andrew alot too. He has a lot of quotes which the two people I hang around use alot, sometimes I don't realize they come from him. There is a good chance you will see more Andrew quotes in my blog.

Another preacher I really like is Joseph Prince. His revelation on grace may even be more powerful than Andrews. He is worth looking into. http://www.josephprince.org/index.asp
