Christian music to minister to the Goth/emo (world)

I have not seen my daughter since she was 2 years old. This week the Lord just Blessed me tremendously and I just established contact with her (at age 14), via e-mail, and found out she is in the Goth/emo scene. Her friends are a part of this as well. I am looking for some ideas on ministering to the Goth/emo music listeners. Here are the bands that I am targeting. Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Avail Lavigne, Evanescence, Taking Back Sunday, Insane Clown Posse, Slipknot. Anyone know of some great Christian artists with that same music beat or style with out the garbage lyrics? I am 37 years old and did not realize this junk was so big (fan base) and attractive (to the younger Generations) or a better description would be to suck them in. Your Advice and Prayers are welcomed and requested. Many Blessings on all of you.

My Testimony:

...

I've listened to alot of different types of Christian music. I cannot for the life of me think of a band that could even begin to mirror something like Insane Clown Posse or Slipknot because they are so intensely evil.

I will be in prayer for your daugher because that particular scene is so dark and depressive. It thrives on gloom and doom and that's a hard thing to conquer without the Light of Christ.

To me all praise and worship songs and hymns can combat that type of music. When I became a Christian I was into bands that were dark and heavy, much like your daughter. God healed me from that darkness by giving me a desire to hear praise and worship music.

I think that you could try to give her some Christian music to "draw her in" but if she's not listening to the Holy Spirit it may not have the affect you are hoping for. These kids are very attached to their music and can get offended if you start trying to replace it if they aren't heeding the call of God.

My suggestion to you would be to start chipping away at the wall that surronds these kids. Talk to her about Christ. Ask her why she chooses darkness over light. There are probably issues of rebellion, trust, anger and rage there.

Your biggest weapon is prayer. On your face before the throne of God for your daugher and her friends.

In Christ Alone,
Marilyn

fresnojoe,
I go back and forth with Christian Alternative all the time. Where I think it's useful in your situation, to reach someone. I think it can be detrimental for a believing teen because it introduces them to a music style with loads of undesirable artists.
I was thinking about Skillet when I first read your blog.
Skillet is moving away from Jesus in their lyrics though. I actually like Evanescence which began as a Christian group. I believe Switchfoot is taking the same route as well.

There is Underoath which is currently on tour with Taking Back Sunday.
Relient K and Sonicflood are good.

Here's an article from Skillet's website Skillet News

Here is a directory of Christian Music

It seems to be pretty common that groups that start out Christian, fade into secular music. So you have to keep up with them.

Hope this helps! I'm praying about it...

Hello fresnojoe,

I was raised in the Christian faith and walked away for a number of years. It was religious music that had a major impact on me 'coming back' to the faith.

I have a number of bands that I can recommend, but let me quickly comment on your comments.
fresnojoe:

I am looking for some ideas on ministering to the Goth/emo music listeners.

Here are the bands that I am targeting. Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Avail Lavigne, Evanescence, Taking Back Sunday, Insane Clown Posse, Slipknot.

Ok my first thoughts are that there is not a whole lot of mainstream goth bands out there. There are a number of bands that have done the goth trip for an album or two, but most of have realized the market just isn't big enough (yet) to sustain a lot of bands in the Christian Goth genre.

At best, you'll need to try to get a hold of similar style music, which is what it looks like you've done by listing who you have above.

Ok, before I get into my list of favorite goth (or semi-goth) bands, let me address the artists you listed above:

Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance -- No idea on these guys... don't even know who they are.

Avail Lavigne -- hot chickLet's see.. in the Christian Music world... check out Krystal Meyers !! The too is a very hot female artist and she's got a couple of very hot songs out right now! Her song 'Anticonformity' on her debut album took the Christian music world by storm! An entire movement amongst young Christians took place because of this song. And the video was #1 for a long time. Her second album Dying for a Heart - with the song "The Beauty of Grace" - is right now rocking the Christian radio stations! Hot, hot, hot song! Ok, it should be noted that while Meyers is a hot Christian artist, I don't think anybody would consider her "goth". Oh, btw... Krystal is also the daughter of the guy who created e-Sword, the #1 Bible program in the world!

Evanescence -- without a doubt, go with Gretchen!! This is another one of my favorite female Christian artists (ok, probably my all time favorite in the Christian rock scene... I use to have a thing for Rebecca St. James... but Evanescense rocks much better!) I've done some work with the guys that take care of their online ministry, and they to rock.

Ok, now here are my thoughts on Christian Goth in general...

Go here: www.ChristianGoth.Com! This website nails it on the head for me! Whoever is behind this website is clearly very knowledgeable of the Christian Goth world. Read the "Christian Articles of Interest" about 1/2 of the way down the page first, than move onto the other stuff.

They have this one page called "Problems only C. Goths Have" that I just get a chuckle out of... very funny (but also very true).

Problems in church:

- having parents move their little children a few rows further away when you seat yourself.
- when the pastor talks about heathens in his sermon and everyone turns to look at you.
- a new church member attempting to 'convert' you.
- when you are praising God in quiet, reverent worship, your bangles / rings / necklaces etc are loudly jangling.
- getting your tights / stockings hooked on the seat / pew in full view of everybody.
- you ran out of waterproof eyeliner, and after a little bit of a drizz during praise and worship your eyes make you look like frankenstein (or the bride of)
- getting up / down the steps (if any) of the church in your heels / huuuge boots (woe betide you if your church has a wooden floor... "clop, clop, bang, thud, clop, clop, bang, thud"
- if you're female : the people behind you moving further to your left / right because they can't see over your dramatic hairstyle which you've piled on top of your head with Victorian ringlets.
- if you're male : forgetting to take your carl mcoy black stetson off when you seat yourself, and the ppl behind you asking you to take it off in order to see the lyrics
- going to a church gathering after church, and when you arrive they take off the don francisco cd and put on a Christian country album (it's the only thing they have with a beat) in order to make you feel more comfortable [ok, ok, that is highly unlikely to happen.. in mean, why would they try to make you feel more comfortable?? hehe, just kidding!!]
- visiting a new church, and the security guard follows you from your car to the church because you are "suspiciously dressed"
- another problem could be found in the black lipstick marks that you leave behind on the cup during the 'Lord´s Supper'...
- having your parents try and make you stop wearing black and tell you when you've worn it too much and having others think you're the next Columbine killer. -- Crimson ... (this is sad because those guys were not goth, like the media led everyone to believe)

Ok, enjoy that... it's just suppose to be funny!

Ok, back to music... ChristianGoth.com also has a VERY nice webpage with a list of artists that are Christian Goth or that are close to it. It's located at http://www.christiangoth.com/music.html. I personally have about 1/2 of all the bands listed on that page. They did good in listing some nice Christian Goth bands!

fresnojoe:
I am 37 years old and did not realize this junk was so big (fan base) and attractive (to the younger Generations) or a better description would be to suck them in.

Personally, I couldn't call it "junk" or that the goth world "sucks you in".

What I tend to think of goth as, and nearly everybody in the goth world, is a place for those of us who have been shunned by the rest of society a place to feel at home, a place where "being weird" or "dressing in black" or "not part of the 'in crowd'" has a place to feel like nobody else thinks they too are like what the rest of society thinks of them.

Might I encourage you to read this article, which is actually an article from the "The Baptist Times", and is titled, "Spirituality and Goths: a challenge to our churches"... it might just help you see that goth does not equal a "junk life style" and/or faith or religious idolatry that 'sucks people in'.

Anyway, I hope this information helps you out. Remember that just because your daughter doesn't talk like you, dress like you, hang out with the friends you'd want her too, or things like that... does not mean she can't serve the Lord Jesus Christ in a manner that is 100% foreign to you.

Hi...so if you're looking for bands then there are good Christian rock bands out there. You just have to dig a little because they aren't in the mainstream much. My reccomendations that haven't already listened...Pillar, Jars of Clay, Flyleaf, Lifehouse (soft rock), and if you're looking for rap then Toby Mac (sp?). It's still "modern" music but if you censored it there wouldn't be any -BEEPS!- and some of the songs are absolutely amazing.

Ok, looks like more studying and investigation. Where does Goth originate? Why the black cloths and white faces? How does the Goth Christian align themselves with the Bible? Does Goth lead to compromise?

This is just my understanding of Goth. Not an expert. But we have semi-survived a brush with this in our home. The black and industrial clothes are no longer worn. However, the rebellion in the heart still lingers.
Was I wrong to let my Christian homeschooled daughter wear black and listen to Christian alternative music? My heart cries out "YES"!
I am the one that will be answering to God on this one. I saw no harm in the black clothes, I even bleached out stripes in her hair that then were dyed red. I supported her desire to be different, 'cause what you wear shouldn't define anything about your Faith. When one of the church deacons taught the teen class on the subject of what they were wearing was disrespectful to God, I wrote him out of list of all the adults that were wearing black to church that day...including the pastor. She didn't go 'goth' because of rejection from society, she became rejected from society because she went 'goth'. That reinforced her battlecry that church is filled with hypocrites, even among the youth.

This quote isn't from a Christian site. It's from Goth.net.
"and why most goths became goths in the first place, tolerance."
That sums it up for me.

If you don't like what I'm wearing, you're judging me.
If you don't like what I'm listening to, you're judging me.
If you don't like my friends, you're judging them and me.

Thank God the clothing is modest!

It's a catch-22. Unless you embrace it, you're intolerant. Which in and of itself is intolerant, but try to explain that one!

From the concept that the Apostles were not conforming to the 'norm'...they could fit into 'goth' culture.
That's how it started for us.
My opinion is based solely on my experience with this in our home. Forgive me if I'm alittle passionate about it.

Philippiansfourseven

"the core 'rejection of society' attitude alone lived on in the gothic subculture. Over time this itself has been modified to be more of a 'no more blind acceptance of society's values' as opposed to rejection because it was there to be rejected (and because you could get away with it!)."--goth.net

I believe completely that embracing the "goth" culture and still claiming Christianity is a compromise.

The Word constantly asks us, "What does light have to do with darkness?"

Everything about the goth/emo culture speaks to darkness. Even if they no longer wear the old school goth clothes or try to make it a little more mainstream it's still a state of rebellion.

Now granted, kids that choose to delve into this goth culture aren't the only ones who are rebellious, I don't want to sound like I htink they are the only ones. I am also not so stiff necked or religious as a Christian that I won't talk to these kids in a heart beat and I have.

Today's youth feels ignored and bored to death with everything around them. They are media saturated to the point of mental breakdown. We, as Saints, have to combat the enemy on his most powerful turf (in my opinion) hollywood and it's influence on these kids. I say fight it like a warrior, tooth and nail with every bit of our armor on and the armies of Heaven behind us!

These kids are so lost and looking for something. It's a hunger/thirst of the soul and they can't fill it with music or fashion or celebrities. Prayer is the biggest battle cry in these situations because pray is more powerful than any rebellion.

More of my 2 cents!

well, seeing as i myself am an "emo christian", i guess i could be of some real help with this issue!

unless someone hasnt told you before, evanescence does, in fact, have a christian message. so a good first step would be to let your daughter know that if she already doesnt.
start introducing her to bands from the record label "tooth and nail" and "solid state". these are the two biggest christian rock record labels out there.

personally, i cant get enough of bands like emery, showbread, and family force 5.
other bands are mae, anberlin, as cities burn, becoming the archetype, zao, norma jean, etc...
of course, you might have to dig around a little for bands like these if you want to buy their cd's. if you know of any family christian stores around you (thats the title of the store, too) they should have these bands cd's. you could also go online.

any more questions? lemme know - christian music is kinda my thing

Hi,

My band has a debut CD out, you can hear it on cdbaby.com, just do a search for Bruised Heel.

The lyrics are solid, and even challenging, and talk about issues like forgiveness, the promises of God, Suicide, your choice to Live for Christ, etc. There are 12 songs on the cd and you can hear a 2 minute sample of each song at cd baby.

One more thing! We are going to be in FRESNO on May 1st in a CHRISTIAN ARTIST BATTLE OF THE BANDS. It is at New Covenant Community church, 1744 E. Nees avenue. Starts at 6PM.

That would be a great place to bring your kids, and let them experience some live Christian music. They might even get a liking for a couple of the bands, and we'll have CD's there for sale...It could be a good foot in the door to let her find her own Christian bands that she likes..

I am inviting you to the show! It is free admission too!

6PM, May 1st!

i somewhat disagree with your concern of many of the named bands. panic at the disco and my chemical romance are basically part of a sub "genre" i guess you could say of the emotive hardcore scene (emo) and shouldn't be much of a concern for you. as for slipknot, their newest album has no obscenity or violent content what so ever. i used to be a 'juggalo' for a few years, before going deep into the Norwegian Black Metal scene. icp, although subliminally, has a vast amount of Christian content. one just needs to know where to look. a few bands that i can think of that arent soft-core christian are:

>Frost like Ashes, a Christian Black Metal band from Canada
>Zao, the founder of Christian Hardcore
>Living Sacrifice, one of the first Christian Death Metal groups

also check out Solid State Records, a division of the Alternitive rock lable, Tooth-n-Nail records.

the whole "goth" scene has gone farther and farther from its origins. it came from the pagans, not satanists. basically, it had a lot to do with paganism's beliefs of earth and nature worship. anyways, the goth scene has evolved over time for kids who feel like they dont fit in, and life is bleak. hot topic just cashed in on it and made it more mainstream. if dont worry, being goth at the age your daughter is is just a phase, and she will grow out of it in time. most of said groups you mentioned, aside from icp have already died out. someone mentioned emo? it came from the mid 80's as a new style of music, called emotive hardcore. it was popularized by early fugazi, minor threat, and massive attack. it has the same characteristics as hardcore (harsh vocals, random percussion, and fast, up-tuned guitars with very emotional lyrics), but the emo scene that seems to have come back has nothing to do with its original roots. the style of music now known as screamo is more close to the original genre. artists now known as emo are mostly one hit wonder groups with a few radio singles, and a more hot-topic approach. need anything else from my random musical knowledge, just post something.

Uh no it doesn't, I don't where you got your information from, but it's roots aren't Pagan; that's a laugh.

Umm... Jesus was a "rebel" in case you all forgot. He shook the pharisaical misconceptions of His day and turned the world right-side up... "rebellion" is a blanket phrase for anything that goes against the norms (only semantics lead many Christians to falsely assume that every time the word is used, its in the context of something "evil"... ahh, semantics- its a problem all throughout this thread!!) True rebellion in that way goes against God, but you can rebel against the world, the status quo... it can also be standing up for what you believe is right.
And seriously... just like there are poser Christians, there are poser goths and goth bands which only give off a bad impression. You've already heard a lot of propaganda from people who judge without knowing, but you also have some good references in here for what Goth truly is, I would suggest that you not simply pay attention to the words of the forum, but some of the websites. Dig around for yourself and above all pray about it! The Lord will help you discern the truth far better than any human with all our fallacies can give!!!
As for Skillet (a personal favorite who would be my biggest recommendation), I think it is unfair to judge them for their switch to the secular market. Just because Christianese lyrics may not always stand out does not mean that their heart behind it has changed... I love what John had to say about their recent changes in this article.

Well let's see about Christian Gothic Rock bands, there's: Saviour machine, The Awakening, I-DRAGON-I (formerly Wedding Party), The Eternal Chapter (now disbanded due to the death of its lead singer, I think he died in a car accident), Virgin Black, that's about it, its not at all that the market for these bands isn't big enough (on the outside yes, but you have to understand that real goth music is based entirely underground and obscure, likewise so is the fanbase for these Christian bands who produce gothic rock and gothic metal music). I'm not entirely keen on the emo "scene" or subculture; it's a fad that's about it; now as for Slipknot and Insane Clown Posse, these aren't gothic bands in the least, ICP is more rap/metal and shock rock (thats ALL I know abut them), and Slipknot is metal I think, I don't know I generally pay no attention to what's "hot" and "in" in the mainstream pop-metal and pop-alternative rock scene (simply because it's pop). As for Christian metal in general: I recommend Demon Hunter, Extol, Living Sacrifice, ZAO and I guess that's about all I know lol.

I have to disagree with the idea that *everyone* attracted to goth image is attracted because of the rebellion/tolerance thing. I'm attracted to it because I like dressing that way. It flatters my body type and my complexion. I'm not a huge fan of the music scene, but I love the clothes, the hairstyle, the makeup. I don't consider myself "goth" but I will look it sometimes, and people judge.. Fortunately for me, I don't really care -- I know who I am, and whom I serve.

It's not always because of thought and conscious choice. Sometimes its just because you like the way it looks or sounds. The attitudes come later.

Just my 2 cents!

Creed has been split up for sometime after Scott Stapp left the band and reaffirmed his life with Christ and now is in his own band. I might also recommend Brian "Head" Welch formally of KoRn has now formed his own band also and his band is just awesome.

Whilst some Emo/Goth band are "evil" as you say they aren't all and some of the nicest people I met are goth/emo. Paramore and Evanescence are Emo/Goth and although they don't write Christian songs they are Christians. Wearing black Gothic clothing ans listening is heavy metal music (providing you check the lyrics) DOES NOT MAKE YOU "UNCHRISTIAN" OR A SATANIST!!
