John 8:12
John 8:12, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life".
Isn't that awesome! Without Jesus Christ's guiding light and inspiration we most definitely cannot succeed. However, with it , we certainly cannot fail. We may falter and stumble along the way, but if we keep looking upward with both eyes open and focussed on the "Light of the world" we will not only find our way home , but will make fewer mistakes in life the more we trust and have faith in His guidance and grow in relationship with the Holy Spirit.
I think it's interesting to look at the realities or symbolism of what darkness means in this context but as seen in today's world.
What do we read and see in the media? Acts of Terrorism, sexual abuse, murder, violence, pornography, foul language, false religions, and oppression to name but a few realities of darkness.
Paul in Ephesians 4:17 - 19 says that "many walk in darkness" , mostly in the futility of their minds which we know are prey to Satan. The beauty however is that Jesus offers hope to those in the darkness because He indicates that He alone provides the true light, just as He alone provides the true and living way which we read in John 14:6 where;
"Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
So, He is the source of light and life. Not just ordinary life, but abundant and eternal life!
As disciples Jesus has told us that, "I have given you to be a light to all nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out of their dungeons where they sit in darkness." In today's familiar Gospel from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus reminds his disciples (and each and every one of us):
You are the light of the world. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket. No, they place it on a stand where it can give light to everyone in the house. Let your light shine that others will see the good you do.
I don't know about you, but that really excites me! In truth it makes me want to venture even further into the Harvestfield!
