Avatar Sizing with MS Paint

The goal is to help folks cut and size an image for their Avatar image by using the standard Microsoft Paint program. That image can then be uploaded to a free storage space and then linked to on the member Avatar page. I'll talk about the free storage space in a different Blog.

Find and remember where your image file is located that you want to use.

Keep in mind the actual final size of your Avatar image is approx. 3/4" x 3/4". (Cut a square of paper to get a visual reference size.)

Locate the Paint program on your computer.

Open the Paint program.

At the top of the page select "File" and then "Open" after the "File" menu opens.

Select the folder and file that represents the image you want to use.

Double click on the photo and Paint will bring it into the program.

In the Icon Menu to the left is a dotted rectangle. Select it.

Move the pointer to the image and click and hold the button down. Drag a square approx. 3/4" x 3/4" (actually it's .69"x .69" or 1 ¾ cm x 1 ¾ cm, both of these equate to 60 pixels x 60 pixels your image needs to be.

There will be a dotted square around the area you will use for your Avatar image.

Go back up to the top menu and select "Edit" and then "Cut". A white space will appear where the image section you want was. It's ok, don't panic.

Go back to the top menu and select "File" and select "New".

A window will pop up prompting you to save a file. Select the "No" button.

You now have a new file open with a small square in the upper left corner. Good!

Go back to the top menu and select "Edit" and then select "Paste".

You now have the image you wanted to use in the small square.

Go back to the top menu and select "Image" and then "Attributes".

In the Attributes window, click to the left of the word "Pixels" to place a dot in front of the word.

In the same window there are 2 boxes, one labeled width and one labeled height. Type the number 60 in each box. (Note if the numbers originally in the box are over a lot over 60 after to selected "pixels" the image area you chose was too big. Start again and maybe use a piece of paper measured to size to help gauge your area.)

Select the "OK" button.

The image will resize slightly. If the original was too small or big it will expand/shrink down and right as needed to resize to 60x60 pixels.

If what you see is ok then go back to the top menu and select "File" and then "Save As".

Again, pay attention to where you are saving the file to or select the folder where you want it to go. (JPEG should be the default file type, if not use the "Save As Type" menu at the bottom to select JPEG as the type) Now select the "Save" Button.

You can now exit the Paint program entirely. (Select the Red X in the top right corner)

Best of Luck!!

In Christ,
GreyBear

Here is another great way to Re-size you images so that they will easily load to this site. I now use it and even have my mother using it as well. It works great as well for sending multiple photos to a friend/family when their mail server limits the size of deliverable mail files.

Resize Digital Pictures Quickly

By Marc Saltzman

Half the fun of taking pictures is sharing them with family and friends.

While it's great that newer digital cameras can take beautiful 5-, 6-, or 7-megapixel pictures, e-mailing such large photo files can clog up your recipient's Inbox. Resizing pictures before you e-mail them-or even before you burn them to a CD-is made simpler using a free Windows XP download called the Image Resizer, which is one of the many handy tools that make up the Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP.

You can also use the Image Resizer to resize photos so they'll fit on a compatible cell phone, personal digital assistant (PDA), or Portable Media Center so you can enjoy your photos while on the go. Using the Image Resizer is easy, and it will preserve your original photos for other uses you may have in the future.

Here is the link Image Resizer

Have fun with it!
