KEEPER OF THE FLAME
"How does that look?" my wife Audrey said as she finished hanging a group of seven newly framed pictures on the family room wall.
"They seem to be going up hill", I replied.
"Perfect!", " she concluded. "All families should be going uphill'
There were thirty one faces, boys and girls, men and women. some black and white - some in color; All seven generations of them, who will reside there for perhaps another ten years, then upward and onward as she said.
While Audrey has been much more than just a "keeper" in our marriage of over 58 years, she has kept and documented the days of our family life in twenty- eight albums, and hundreds of snapshots done the hard way, Those she will dispense the relevant contents to the young "when they are ready". Some are not yet... some have been, and have their "starter kit" from their day one.
Where does this penchant for posterity come from? Books and movies, Christian ministiries have been dedicated to "keeping of the flame". In the earliest days those who brought oil to the lighhouse keeper were so designated. That implication is easy.
We do not have to look far to the source of the real inspiration which begins with "Honor thy father and mother" to "Thou shalt teach them dilligently to thy children".
There is much evidence of this same disposition in our family girls (wouldn't you know) so none of this will go wanting. As to faith of all as pictured. I cannot entirely say, though I know it, for many, comes with the territory- the ground of each in his generational walk; Many of whom would be known to sing , as they trod along, the very old hymn, as I have ,"Faith of our fathers living still" and ending, "thru the truth that comes from God, we all shall truly be free"
What a pretty picture... ... ... in any age.
Still burning brightly in low these many years.
