TO WORK... ...OR NOT

And, my son Britts' reply was, "There is no way I'm filing for unemployment". It was no surprise to me, for his first words to family and friends shortly after birth were,"Don't worry I'll take care of it". He had, and has, no use for a stimulus package, You see he is a "Handyman" and has long been serving a small community and, by referral, been expanding into a larger radius.

He is now in his early fifties and now consiodering the threat of fines ($600.00 an incident) for operating without license and insurance. The pressures are increasing even in the face of huge unimployment.

Admittedly, there are a number of equities here; The brother Handyman who says he is losing businesss or pay scale due to unfair competition. The government, by loss of fees (pay unto Ceasar) and the insurance company loss of payments and security. He was once licensed and bonded. He worked less in good times.

Britts' customer is fully advised as to the lack of above and why he is competitive. The customer reacts to the benefit of, in most every case, a much lower bid. He works on small deposits and pay upon completion and satisfaction. It is very apparent that many people choose to correct a problem or do an improvement based upon its' affordability. Britt uses few subs because of his overall cabability in many fields. Many of his patrons are real-estate investors with rentals. All on referrals and no advertising.

On the one hand, in this ecomomy materials are being purchased and problems are being solved that may have gone wanting. Often the elderly are involved.
On the other; Rules are rules and the equities listed are to be considered.

Is there ever a time that we as parents are not called upon to measure our principles against our childrens conduct? What was it that we instilled in them? As with all of my four (and theirs) the work ethic - That rules were not only there to punish errant behavior, but to protect others. There are the moral imperatives of God that are foremost.

This is not a "What would Jesus do" issue... or is it? I do not look for grey areas - Nor does God acknowlege them ; But I know grey when I see it. Perhaps only because he is my boy and he is a work or die kind of guy.

What say you? milt

This hits close to me, I am a self emplyed HVAC contractor right now, and it is tough. As far as the regulations, it depends a lot on the counties involved, probably. In my state there are a few counties that do not worry much about codes and permits, but they are rare. One could also get involved in State regulations if they do not get all the state requires, regardless of the counties involved. A lawsuit would be much easier if one did not aquire all the legal requirements, not counting the fines you mentioned.

I have the county license, state license, insurance, and do the permits and inspections if they are involved. They are for both the owners and the contractors protection, if something goes wrong, and today, much can. I have to work alone because I can not afford the workmans comp. and all that involves. It is hard for the little-guy, and I know where he comes from. Still, I personally keep all those regulations, to not have to worry about it, I got too much to worry about even when I do. Just things to consider, I am not gonna judge and point fingers myself, hope this helped some. billy

Suddenly it hit me on reading Billy's blog... no longer are you now self-employed...perhaps the Lord is telling that He now must be the Employer . He wants compliance and will take care of the big things. The jobs that would come would be the ones He blesses and the ones that would not come would be the troublesome jobs which could bring those fines. He uses those compliances as His screening mechanism to protect the little man over the big man. Perhaps that is what will separate the man from the boys, perhaps the Lord can use even the red-tape to protect His own in enemy territory. All glory must go to Him even in these tough times. Hang in there, He takes responsibility to supply your needs by your obedience.

Read also the CB blog on "Pulling down Strongholds"by the Unworthyservant.
It is related to how we must change or not change in these new times that have come upon us.

Well, at least you're not alone I don't believe. Many of us who have 'grown' children may go through similar situations. Kids will be kids...and parents will be parents. However, I'm with Evelyn...word for word!
In our fears, we 'cut' and chisel, which brings on fret, which brings on troubles, which brings on illness instead of sticking with our integrity and trusting that God knows what He's doing. We just don't like the way He's doing it sometimes

My heart and prayers are with you, 2G
