It's so easy to lose sight of Jesus at Christmastime. Images of Santa and "winter holidays" overpower images of Jesus. There's no doubt in my mind that my dog would (a) not sit with Santa or (b) bite him if she did.
I think a few Christmases ago, I was hit squarely with a brick between my eyes. I was lamenting the fact that I would not spend Christmas Eve or Christmas Day with my daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughters. I found myself praying, Lord, how unfair! Christmas is about family! Instantly I knew that was a lie. Christmas is not about family, or presents, or food, or any one of many things we think. Christmas is about the birth of our Savior.
But we do like to bake a birthday cake for Jesus on Christmas Day.
Great blog, KK. thanks!

Great blog, kraftykatz! You make a lot of good points.
Here, where I am, there are a lot of atheists and agnostics who celebrate what they call "Christmas". They have Christmas trees, give each other gifts, and do things exactly like what you were writing about, with Santa. Now, I think this is an absolute abomination, a slap in the face to God. On the day Christ came into the world, these people celebrate the day while denying his existence! I can't even fathom such a messed up way of thinking. It saddens me, but these people are so set on their beliefs that nothing can prove them wrong. Everything relating to God is something that can just be explained away.
At this holy time of year, the fact that there are people celebrating "Christmas" while denying God saddens and appalls me. It's a sad thing indeed, these people worship the idea of simply having a reason to give each other gifts. I'm glad to see here that there are many people out there who still have a strong relationship with Christ.

Kat, thanks for this blog.
I had never really thought about it, but a lot of the time, kids really don't like to sit on Santa's lap.
Myself, I have never had, nor do I have any intention of having Paulie go in and sit on Santa's lap. Nor do I talk about Santa Claus with Paulie, or threaten to call him when Paulie is misbehaving, or any of that other balogna. I have been catching some flack about it from non-believing family members. I do not think there is something awful about Santa, I just don't see any reason to put emphasis on the fictional character that's been created, that has nothing to do with the real reason for Christmas.
At any rate, thanks again for writing this.

Usually when I hear this type of response from my counseling couch, it's the result of a child who wanted to visit santa; however, they were just not permitted. Surprisingly, my children have visisted santa, yet continue to lead normal lives. i believe the grace of god is sufficient to provide my children with the strength to overcome their santa experience. i believe you should consider putting your faith into action...possible a peaceful protest agaisnt the fascist "wish factory," disguised as a jolly old man.
while on the topic of frauds, i also believe we should remove that blond hair blue eyed guy who goes around hanging himself on church walls pretending to be jesus.

My children did talk to Santa one year on the phone. They even wrote letters to Santa.
I think you should go back and re-read what I wrote.
It is when the fictional character of Santa becomes MORE important then Jesus that is the problem. Santa can be a fun character like Frosty the Snowman and Elf's. I took my children into the big park in town that had a life size nativity but never to see Santa at the store.
"Put my faith into action" does that mean you think my faith is lacking? I do not judge parents who subject their kids to the unhappiness expressed in the e-mail I received.

Thanks for the message!
We played Santa with our children until the youngest started asking pointed questions such as "How" things worked. When we couldn't give the "They say that..." answer any longer we sat them down and explained the story of St. Nicolas. We felt that expecting them to believe in a man who brings physical toys they can see who turns out not to be real was too much. After telling them that Santa is real for a while, how could I then expect them to believe me about Jesus Christ who they couldn't physically touch. Yes, I know that later on they would understand the difference, but we didn't want them doubting us in the formative years. Besides, they love being in on the secret!
Another positive about this was that when God literally supplied us with anonymous gifts that year - we had NO money to buy anything more than a few dollar store items - we were able God the glory instead of Santa! Though my oldest was a little freaked by the fact that his gifts said To: Derek From:God :-)

What a wonderful experience for your children. The spirit of giving is the St. Nicholas story. I also never let my children think Santa was real. Jesus is the reason for the season.

This morning in service, Pastor shared an experience he had many years ago at a Sears store.
There was a Nativity just inside the entrance of the store. They were life size figures. Well he was admiring the display, a young boy came and stood next to him. The child's mother was looking at clothing that was right near.
Than the mother came and took the boy and said, let's go see Santa we have no time to stand and look at this.
Christ is the center of Christmas. When adults put playing Santa games before the true meaning of Christmas we are hurting our children. This seems the appropriate ending for this blog. Christ is more important then Santa. Christ is real, Santa is make believe.
