Hiding true feeling behind logic and common sense, hiding truth behind the lies we tell our self.

Hiding true feeling behind logic and common sense, hiding truth behind the lies we tell our self.

Proverbs 2:10-11:

[10]When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; [11]Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

The class ring

In high school when it was time for me to order my class ring, my father was on lay-off from the paper mill. He had been off several weeks and had no idea when he would be called back to work.

I knew this so I never even mentioned ordering the class ring to my father. I had myself totally convinced that I did not even really want the class ring. I felt no sadness about not having the ring. I was truly at peace about it.

A year later my father was working regular hours again at the paper mill and it was my sister's turn to order her class ring. After Dad gave sister her money, he turned to me and said, "Here is $25.00 for you, see if you can still order your ring."

I did not hesitate even a second and took to money to school and picked out my class ring. Deep down in my heart of hearts, I did want that ring. Sometimes we lie to our self to protect our self from a pain or disappointment, like with the class ring.

Self-lies

Other times we do it to hide our sin from our self. We can come up with some very logical sounding statements to justify a sin in our life. Sometimes I wonder if we really need Satan to lead us astray when we are so good at this self-lie thing.

Proverbs 4:23:

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

I have watched as people have themselves totally convinced that living with someone is not sin. They "feel" married in their heart so there for they are.

Nothing anyone says penetrates this self-lie. No Bible verses seem to register. Someone once told me she knew what the Bible said but in her case it's different. All anyone else could do at that point is pray.

People do this self-lie thing with financial giving, the giving of time to help others, lack of regular church attendance, Bible reading and study, and even lack of a prayer life. The self-lie thing can also be used to criticize others using a self-righteous superior attitude because they are positive they are hearing the Holy Spirit.

Every self-lie is hidden behind a personal belief or desire many of which are not godly or righteous and are not pleasing to God. We do this so we do not have to face God's truth, which may be telling us we are wrong.

Romans 12:2:

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

How do we guard our self from the self-lie? Walking in the Spirit is a 24/7 365 day a year walk. It is not Sunday morning church service. Even then we must be careful we do not deceive our own self thus in turn deceive others.

AMEN! I have had those self-lies and boy it is hard to break them. I do it all the time because I want people to be happy with me, but thats not what it is about. It is about pleasing God with your life and when I lie to myself and somebody else about something, then I am truly sinning in my heart.

Thanks for throwing a brick at my head. I need to be honest!

"To thyself be true" may be somewhat true but would better be stated: "To thy God let thyself be true". I thought of much of 1 John in your post. People must be honest with themself in light of the Bible or they will always end up talking themselves right out of the Word. Great post.
