While I was still in the hospital recovering from my stroke, my brother stopped by one day to give me an early Christmas gift. He was so happy that I could now recognize him and converse with him again. To tell you the truth, he had wondered if I would ever do so again.
"Remember that loan I gave you earlier this year?" I nodded my head. At a time when we had some unexpected things come up and my husband wasn't getting many free-lance jobs, my brother had stepped in and given us a loan. He preferred that I borrowed from him rather than someone else and the terms were good... 0% interest  .
"Well," continued my brother, "Don't worry about it."
I started to thank him for taking it off my plate until I got back to work when he stopped me. "No, you don't understand," he said. "As far as I am concerned the debt is paid in full. You owe me nothing."
Tears filled my eyes as my brother hugged me and said, "I'm just glad you're here!"
As I recall this moment, tears are running down my cheeks. You see as wonderful as this was for me, I am remembering how our precious Savior, Jesus Christ took our place so that we might be forgiven. He didn't have to do it but He did and for that I am eternally grateful! Forgiven! Oh what a beautiful word!
My brother's forgiveness was not based on what I did or did not do. It was based upon the fact that I was his sister and he loved me.
We can run around jumping through hoops trying to earn God's forgiveness but the bottom line is this. Jesus shed His blood for our forgiveness simply because of who we are... because He loves us!
