In the classic allegory, The Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan writes that after climbing the Hill of Difficulty, Christian saw two men named Mistrust and Timorous running toward him. He tells them they are running the wrong way. They need to turn around if they hope to reach the Celestial City.
Fearfully, they tell him that they have given up and are returning home. The way is much too dangerous. In fact, up ahead are two fierce lions lying on either side of the road and if he tries to pass them, Christian will surely be killed! Christian is afraid but he decides to continue on.
Eventually, as he approaches the Palace Beautiful, he sees the lions on either side of the road. He must pass between them. Poor Christian! What could he possibly do? He did not want to turn back but if he pressed on, surely he would be devoured by the lions!
At that moment, the porter whose name was Watchful, saw him and cried out:
Christian did as he was told. Although the lions roared, they were unable to harm him. Their chains held them fast.
There are times in our lives when we will encounter fearsome roaring "lions". We will see the fierceness of their sharp claws and teeth and terror will threaten to overpower us.
The lions are chained...
The lions you encounter might be sin you are grappling with. It might be a bad relationship, a job situation, money or... even cancer. The lions are chained...
It does not matter what big claws and teeth they have or how loudly they roar. They can bare their teeth, claw at the air and let out all the monstrous roars they want. It doesn't matter what they do for the lions are chained.
Regardless of what happens to us in this world... the lions are chained and we must never forget that. The lions are chained. Let us keep to the middle of the path, take our eyes off the lions and and follow Jesus Christ... the One who has power over any and all lions.
Blessings!
