I went to see my oncologist on Friday. I told him everything was good but then mumbled about the diabetes. "You can beat this you know." he said. I raised my head and looked at him. "But..."
"I don't think it was caused by the steroids and I think you can make this go away completely."
That's when I learned a bit more. Apparently my oncologist is of the belief it has more to do with an overabundance of a particular type of cell which women choose to never mention so I'll call it Cell X. Cell X likes to take it easy and consume the most delectable things...unless they happen to be good for you. Cell X hates anything which is good for you. Cell X also resists insulin. Bad Cell X.
If Cell X gets too powerful, you have a problem but there is a key to stripping Cell X of it's power. It's called diet and exercise. I think I just heard my friend Alight cheering in the background.
My oncologist has seen concrete evidence that I have the power to conquer Cell X. He noted that I've lost 32 pounds since August. He noted that my blood sugar levels have gone down dramatically. He insists that I have the knowledge, strength and resources to do what I need to do and he fully expects me to do it. "You know what to do, so just do it!" he snapped at me. While this may sound harsh, I have to tell you I appreciated his honesty. My oncologist is not the least bit interested in preserving my feelings. He's interested in preserving my life. "You didn't go through everything you did with cancer just to have diabetes get you. Quit worrying about what you can't change and start changing what you can!"
I've been listening to the song The Victor by the late Keith Green for most of the day. This song reminds me that I do not serve a defeated savior. I serve the all-powerful Savior who defeated death, hell and the grave and He has given me power to do the same. I am not a victim of my circumstances. I am a victor over them! This is true of every Christ Follower.
So. Why are we living like we're a defeated people in hostile territory? Are we going to listen to the enemy who is a liar or are we going to listen to God? When God has promised us that He will always be with us, when He promised that we would be more than conquers, when he promised that the fire and flood would not consume us, He wasn't kidding. Yet far too often, myself included, we are living as if we are prisoners of war instead of free Princes and Princesses of God.
We need to remember who we are! We need to remember who God is! We know what we need to do. Now we just need to set our eyes on the goal and do it!
I don't know about you, but I don't want to live like I'm a defeated person. I want to live like I'm a Princess of God!
I found this video clip of The Victor on youtube and thought I'd share it. It was done back in 1978 at Estes Park. For some of us who were living back then, this may be a walk down memory lane and remind us of what we know to be true. It's a bit long, almost five minutes, but if you choose to listen to it, may God let the words burn in your heart as they have burned in mine today!
