Are you like spring steel, or do you loose your temper?

In worship today at school the teacher was talking about losing ones temper and she used the illustration of how steel looses its "temper" when it gets heated.

As I was sitting there thinking about this I recalled that I had actually watched a co-worker temper steel in such a way that it returned to its original shape if struck or bent. (This guy had made a spring to replace a broken leaf-spring on a large truck.) Spring steel is made by adding lots of heat to steel to bring it to being red hot and then cooling it very, very slowly so that it does not loose its temper.

We humans are actually just like steel in that when we become heated and "blow off steam" or loose our "cool" (loose our heat) we loose our temper. But if we don't allow someone to cause us to "blow up" and burn someone with our hot words and if we actually allow God to control the way we deal with what makes us angry and allow Him to dissipate the heat inside us then we are able to keep our temper and not loose it. We become like a spring in that we are able to keep from being all "bent out of shape".

Our Bible tells us that it is OK to be angry. In other words, it's OK to get "hot under the collar ". What is NOT OK is to let off some of that heat in the form of harsh words. It's NOT OK to hurt someone else just because we are angry, to "blow our top" if you will.

Go ahead and be angry. You do well to be angry but don't use your anger as fuel for revenge...

This is actually a good blog. I like it and recommed it to many and namely myself. The deal is this, the devil works up an issue many disagree upon and they can but help themselves tell their opinion which irritate others and relationships are broken. And the best thing to do is that when an issue rises, let it bounce a couple of times to see what direction it is taking and if it is really worth break up with someone over the subject...

Especially around the holidays, expect a lots of issues in the family and blogs here that bring up issues which prompt many to let up steam and stumble. Let the issue roll and come to stop and then gently state my opinion in a courteous manner...

May you be blessed. Amen.

Thanks John, I later found one I thought might be even better, but could not change it when I tried. What I wanted to use was this Coil Spring Lamp Shade at http://www.flickr.com/photos/63095335@N00/283774140/

(Oops, I think this may be a bug John. It seems like the "at" sign caused part of this URL to become a link. I tried to use this same URL in a normal link here and it did not work either.)

Hope you do not mind John, but I just changed the photo from what you liked to the Coil Spring Lamp Shade one I talked about.

Brother lineman:

Excellent blog and very applicable to me. Yesterday, for most of the day, I'd lost my own "temper." I was overheated, to be sure, on many issues. I needed to blow off some steam and did. My blogs of yesterday and some of the comments I left showed that clearly.

Then, last eve, I spend a good deal of time shut away in my den cooling down. I wasn't alone, of course. I had my Bible, a book by Watchman Hee and some relly quality time with the Son.

It's all god!

Art, I love that "cooling down" with your Bible and with "the Son" analogy. That's the very best way to "cool down". The Son can even keep you hot and even turn this heat into fire for Him!
Only He can keep us from blowing up.

Thanks!

Thanks Dan.

I reread my blog comment and found a typo... or was it? I wrote: "It's all god!" I'd intended it to be "It's all good!" Trugh is, with a minor change, I did get it right:

"It's all God!"

Dear Dan--I look at Jesus, and I saw a man who knew when to become angry and what to become angry about. It was always in defense of someone or something outside Himself. God's temple. Demon possessed people. His own disciples. Ordinary sinners. He never failed to defend them, but He never defended Himself. Well written and well stated blog with an excellent illustration.YBIChrist--Ron

Very good point Ron,

Jesus never defended Himself, but ALWAYS defended others if they were being singled out unfairly. When He cleansed the temple I see that as Him defending His Father's honor and goodness.

Great comment, thanks!

Interesting you post this.

Had a little anger problem last week.
I shut-up when he made me mad turned aside and gave it to God.
All turned out alright - felt good if I may say so - I'm come from a very angry background.

Excellent post.

Interesting indeed. This is an old post that I was allowed to set as a Featured Blog. Maybe it was just for you this time?

This blog says it all. I completely lost my temper today, so I tried to get away from everyone/everything and prayed about it. Came back and I was feeling much better, along w/the person who caused me to lose my temper. So glad you posted this!
