Discipline! Or lack thereof.... |
 |

For several months now I have struggled with my bible studies, mainly finding the time, finding the motivation, finding the right frame of mind with which to approach the Word of God. I'm full of ambition and intention, but fail miserably in practice! Usually life takes over; having 5 kids plays havoc with quiet reading time!
I have various bibles, all with study plans, none of which I have yet managed to follow! So this time I'm going to use a book of mine called Search the Scriptures, which is a bible study guide with questions at the end of each session, and I'll write them all in a notebook I use purely as my own personal Christian "log".
Let's hope putting things down on paper will help me to study, absorb, and put into practice what I read.
What methods do you all use to learn and maintain your "diet" of scripture?

Every morning ,right after I wake up, I read a Proverb to start my day. I pray and then I get out of bed and start my day. This has helped me so much. Then before bed, I read wherever God leads me. Right now its between 1 Corinthians, Jeremiah, and Luke. I journal stuff I learned and favorite verses. It has helped me soo much! It has taken me forever to get into this routine, but on days when I miss reading, something feels off, and I start drifting from God and His promises.

In my opinion the most important is Getting a hold of the Promises of the Lord in the word if you are a new believer. It Gives you all that you need to defeat the lies of the enemy and builds confidence and trust in the Lord.
Lets say you know the Promises of the Lord. So you want a deeper knowledgeable understanding of the bible. Now there is were it gets tricky. A person can get lost in all the indephed Studies ranging from the opinions of bible scholars theologians, Concordances, Archological study.
I personally like the dummies version of bible study. what I mean is when I read a particular book its hard to grasp it because the bible times was a very different time and way of living compared to our twenty first century living. The only connection we have with the characters of the bible is the spiritual connection that we have God as our father and the situations they faced are almost identical to ours. Were I get Lost on the bible is the way the characters of the bible lived and socialized and the metaphors the lord uses are based mostly on a culture that is long gone.
This is were the dummies version of bible study comes to the rescue for me. I love the bible books that are loaded with pictures and explanations of how a character or the bible or prophet would look like and simply explain the culture and manners of that time period so I can visualize it so much clearer when I read.
The book I like to use is Called The essential Bible manners and Customs Here is the Isbn number: 0-8024-2479-1
This is what the book helps explain.
Sections on Clothing, Food and Dwellings, How people earned a living in biblical times, Social groups such as Essenes, Herodians and Zealots, Government and warfare, Sea and Land Travel
The book is only 293 pages.
I hope this was some help to you. God bless.
