In the beginning, God created...
"In the beginning, God created." (Genesis 1:1, NIV) "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27, NIV)
From these two scriptures three assertions can be confidently made:
1. God is a creative being.
2. God created humans to be the physical reflection of his glory, creative power, personality, and rule in the earth.
3. Humans, created in the image of God, will have a God-given desire to create.
There's no question about it, every person alive was created by God to create. This creative drive was extremely active in many of us as children, but something happened as time went on: we became adults. For most adults, the pressures, expectations, and demands of adulthood usually crushes the inward drive to create. This is truly sad and most unfortunate. When we fail to create, we fail to fully reflect the image of God who created us. Let me say this again, because it's worth repeating: when we fail to create, we fail to fully reflect the image of God who created us.
I have found the following questions helpful when approaching my own creative failings.
1. What has God given me in order to help me create?
2. What am I presently failing to create?
3. What fears, concerns, or obstacles presently hinder my creative process?
4. What direction or word is God speaking to me through the creative process?
5. What identifiable need will my creation(s) improve?
Note of consideration: God created all things through Jesus Christ (John 1:1-10, Hebrews 1:1-3). As Christians, we are empowered to create only as we grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ, the mediator of God's creative power. Jesus said, "Without me, you can do nothing." (John 15:5) Jesus' statement surely includes our personal creative process.
May you richly be blessed as you create to the Glory of God.
