Consumer Christians

This morning my teaching pastor rebuked the church. One campus of the church. He'll do it again at the next three services.

And he should.

I live in one of the most unchurched areas in the country, in the city that is the largest in the region. God's truth is penetrating the darkness, many are coming to Christ and many others are offended, just as Jesus said they would be. The tension is palpable.

"Giving" ... why should I give to my church? Isn't this what they do, won't God provide?

God promises to feed us and clothe us (Matt. 6:25-34). He doesn't promise to keep the lights on in our churches. Paul commands us to not "muzzle the ox while he is threshing. The laborer is worthy of his wages." (1 Timothy 5:17-19). That means the pastors and the deacons who serve us by giving many hours away from their own families to strengthen our's.

The average household giving is $10 per month???

"... for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matt. 6:21).

What about being able to download so many resources for free? Who maintains the website? Who provides the technology for the air war?

We do, as good stewards of God's gracious provision. $10/month, that's 2 1/2 lattes, not even grandes or double shots.

Rant over. Pray with me please for people to be transformed into cheerful givers (2 Cor. 9:7) and not be only consumers of the Father's grace but to thank Him in action.

It all belongs to Him.
