Who's In Charge Here?
Our current teaching subject is the book of Daniel; today's sermon was on Chapter 4. King Nebuchadnezzar has had another learning experience. This one was much more intense and resulted in a 180-degree change in his life. That Daniel could not only tell him the content of the previous dream, but interpret it, survive the fire of that furnace with his peers and the Other Man, had impressed King N. But this new dream was exponentially more intense!
Daniel explained the details of this new dream: King N. would have his authority (and sanity) taken from him, he would be driven from his people to go live with wild animals, and eat grass like cattle. Seven years would pass, and relief would come only when he, the greatest king in the world, would acknowledge that the Most High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and He gives them to anyone He wishes! (Dan 4:31-32 NIV) Pastor then gave us these applications: What We Learn About God, and What We Learn About Ourselves.
About God: 1) God is in Control...of the heavens, of the nations, of those in power, and always for good. 2) God resists people who think they are in control!
About Ourselves: 1) Pride and Prosperity often coexist (Dan 4:4) 2) Pride and compassion seldom coexist (Dan 4:27) 3) I will humble myself, or God will do it for me (Dan 4:37; James 4:6) 4) The humble break out in praise to God (Dan 4:2) and 5) A God-focus is a Sane-focus! (Dan 4:34)
Well, we will have to see if King Nebuchadnezzar continues to give God the glory for having brought him through this harrowing seven years, or not. As for me, I am going to give myself a good examination, and root out any unacknowleged praise due to Our Triune LORD, and work on a more submissive attitude to Him and concern for my fellow creatures. Stay tuned. Blessings, Possum
