The Holy Spirit very recently enabled me to see this: Genesis 1:1 serves as a simple straight forward introduction to the text that is to follow. It introduces the order in which God created the Heaven and the Earth.
This becomes easier to see when one takes notice of how each succeeding section of scripture from Genesis 2:4 through Genesis 11 begins with an introductory phrase, "These are the generations of" (or for Chapter 5 -"This is the book of the generations of Adam). All of these chapters relate to the beginning years of Creation, the setting up of the world. This scripture gives us the early details of the history of mankind. The first introduction "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Then, the succeeding sections of scripture about Creation up to the Tower of Babel begin with "These are the generations of. . . "
(See picture in right hand corner. If you accept the theory of millions of years,
according to the fossil record, all of these things occur before man falls into sin:
pain, death, killing, disease, thorns, struggle, suffering, extinction.)

Heaven and Earth Under Construction: Summarizing God's Order of Creation:
Genesis 1-1 KJV Introduction to the week of Creation.
As you follow the progression, it becomes clear that heaven and earth were created together at the same time and not at different times but integrated in orderly fashion.
I love this verse: "Yea, My hand has laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand has spread out the heavens; when I called to them, they stood up together." (Isaiah 48:13) Hebrew Bible. Heaven and Earth stood up (were created) together.
Genesis 1:2-5 DAY 1 LIGHT
God surveys and summarizes the situation, water needed for all of life has already been created and LIGHT, the energy source is spoke into existence.
God prepares to do His creative work. He indicates to us that Earth was without form, it was empty, darkness covered space and His Spirit was moving over the water ready to go into motion for when God would speak forth The Word. God spoke The Word and said "Let there be light." The Word (later becoming flesh-Jesus) was the energy source for all of Creation.
Genesis 1:6-8 DAY 2 FIRMAMENT (HEAVEN)
God creates a FIRMAMENT in the midst of the waters dividing waters above and below. He creates the atmosphere surrounding Earth. God calls the firmament HEAVEN. (See Lexicon for Heaven with Day 4)
Firmament in Hebrew is - Raqiya`- meaning extended surface (solid), expanse, firmament expanse (flat as base, support) firmament (of vault of heaven supporting waters above) considered by Hebrews as solid and supporting 'waters' above. Old Testament Hebrew Lexicon - KJV.
An objective of Day 2 seems to be God's creation of the atmosphere surrounding the Earth in preparation for the creation of plantlife to take place on Day 3.
Genesis 1: 9-13 DAY 3 EARTH and PLANTS
God the Holy Spirit then gathered together the waters below and a large land mass appeared. God called the land mass EARTH and the waters SEAS.
This land mass divided during and after the worldwide flood of Noah's time. Noah, his family and the animals were on the Ark for a year. The vast majority of fossils were deposited during this flood that occurred about 4,400 years ago.
Back to Day 3, God prepared the ground for plant life. Genesis 2:6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. Then, God created plant life. Genesis 1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth GRASS, the HERB yielding seed, and the FRUIT TREE yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
Genesis 1:14-19 DAY 4 SUN, MOON, STARS
verse 14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

The word Heaven in Genesis 1:1 is the same word that is used in Genesis 1:8-9 and 1:14-17 KJV. Does it not make sense that the word Heaven that is being referred to in Genesis 1:1 is actually the firmament that was created on DAY 2 - the visible heavens, the sky, as an abode of the stars, as the visible universe, as the atmosphere surrounding Earth? Heaven and Earth were created at the same time.
The KJV Old Testament Hebrew Lexicon - Heaven - Strong's Number: 08064
Original Word ~ymX from an unused root meaning to be lofty
Transliterated Word Shamayim
Phonetic Spelling shaw-mah'-yim
Definition
1. heaven, heavens, sky
a. visible heavens, sky
1. as abode of the stars
2. as the visible universe, the sky, atmosphere, etc.
b. Heaven (as the abode of God)
King James Word Usage - heaven 398, air 21
*******
God created two great lights to give light to the earth. The SUN to rule the day. The MOON to rule the night. He made the STARS, too.
God completed creating the Earth on Day 3 and completed creating the Heaven on Day 4. The Earth would have begun orbiting the sun on Day 4 and the moon orbiting the Earth on Day 4. Plus, the planets and galaxies were made on Day 4.
Genesis 1:20-23 DAY 5 FISH and FOWL
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature - FISH - that hath life, and FOWL that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
God's use of the phrase after their kind and after his kind tells us clearly that God did not use evolution when He created all of life. There are NO transitional forms in the fossil record. God uses these phrases when He created plants, fish, fowl and animals. AFTER THEIR KIND.
Genesis 1:24-25 DAY 6 LAND ANIMALS
24And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, CATTLE, and CREEPING THING, and BEAST of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Please take note how many times God uses the phrase after his kind and after their kind.
Genesis 1:26-31 DAY 6 MAN and WOMAN God's crowning glory!
God created man and woman after His own image, after His likeness. God made man and woman to rule over the Earth. Praise God.
God created the Heaven and the Earth and all things in them in six (regular) days about 6,000 years ago. Please read: Creation Series: Supplement-Creation Six Ordinary Days Also, the bloodline of Jesus Christ tells us that Creation took place between 6,000 and 7,000 years ago.
Exodus 20:11
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Revelation 10:6
6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:
