Where Did Demons Come From?

And He (Jesus) said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. .. . And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils...Mark 16:13, 17.

Jesus states very clearly those "that believe, in My name shall they cast out devils." I sometimes wonder what today's born again believers think these words are saying. They are very clear! Part of our calling to witness includes casting out devils, also referred to in different translations as unclean spirits, evil spirits and demons. I believe the most accurate description would be unclean spirits. In this discussion, however, I will use what I think is the most commonly used name today, demons.

Many believe demons are fallen angels. I do not believe this to be true. In this writing I will share where the Holy Spirit has taken me and the understanding I now believe.

I do not like to concentrate on demons. But, I believe the ministry assignment Jesus has been preparing me for will most certainly involve the casting out of demons. So, about four years ago, I earnestly sought guidance concerning their origin. Following is what I have come to understand.

Angels Called Sons of God in Old Testament
Important to this whole discussion is taking in the knowledge and understanding that in the Old Testament angels were called sons of God. I believe I was first introduced to this fact by Perry Stone from his program Manna-Fest. Since that introduction, I have heard other teachers refer to this truth also. So, lets look at Old Testament references.

The first book written from the Old Testament is believed to be the book of Job. From KJV:

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

Job 2:1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

Job 38 verse 4, Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth. Verse 7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Newer translations have changed the Hebrew translation of "sons of God" to read angels in the book of Job. In my opinion this change has added to confusion regarding text that hasn't been changed in the book of Genesis and still reads sons of God. At this point in this writing, I will simply introduce Genesis 6:1-2

Genesis 6:1-2 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them. That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

The pure uncompromised literal reading of these verses tells us the sons of God are angels and some of these angels took daughters of men as wives.

Demons are Earthbound
Unlike angels, demons are earthbound. I do not remember exactly when I was made aware of this, but it was confirmed through my exploring a book by Derek Prince titled They Shall Expel Demons. He has had many years of experience with the casting out of demons. He describes demons as "disembodied spirit beings that have an intense craving to occupy physical bodies. ... It is hard for us to entertain the idea of a person without a body. Nevertheless, even though demons have no bodies, they have all the normally accepted marks of personality. 1. Will 2. Emotion 3. Intellect 4. Self-awareness 5. Ability to speak. .. Demons appear to be earthbound creatures."

In other words, demons are spirits with souls (personalities) that are in need of a body to house them.

Lets look at scriptural evidence that demons are earthbound. .

Mark 5:8-13 For He (Jesus) said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And He asked him. What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought Him much that He would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought Him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

Matthew 12:43-45 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. (See also Luke 11:24-26)

The Origin of Demons
In the book by Prince, he states there are two main theories concerning the origin of demons. 1. fallen angels -- not so or 2. disembodied spirits of a pre-Adamic race -- not true

I believe it was this theory about disembodied spirits of a pre-Adamic race, which I totally reject as Adam was the first man ever created, that turned my attention to those who died in the worldwide flood of Noah's time.

With the understanding that I had gained, I began to concentrate on the worldwide flood that destroyed all of mankind, all fowl and all land dwelling animals, except those protected in the Ark. Did the origin of demons have something to do with this flood? I could not consider in my mind the idea that demons originated from the people who died in the flood.

Finally, I remember it was in the summer of 2007, that I asked Jesus, "Are you willing to show me where demons came from?" Two days later, I knew the answer. It came to me this way: if the sons of God who took the daughters of men as wives had children? I knew right then and there the answer. Then when I reread Genesis 6, it was as if God had laid out the answer clearly before me.

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them. That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. (This means that 120 years would pass and then God would destroy His creation.)

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and the beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. Genesis 6:1-7

The answer to the question where did demons come from: they came from the children (and their descendants) of the unholy unions between sons of God (angels) and daughters of men.

Many of these offspring died during the worldwide flood, but since the practice rekindled for a while after the flood, some died after the flood. When these children, born in these unholy abominable unions, died their disembodied spirits with a soul (personality) had no place to go. God made no provision for these unclean spirits. Our spirit with a soul will receive new incorruptible bodies at the resurrection, but these unclean spirits have no provision made for them. They have no body to be housed in. These unclean spirits are earthbound and in a constant search for a body they can house themselves in.

This is the origin of demons (unclean spirits). I believe, it absolutely makes the most sense.

Why Revealed To Me - God Only Knows
Perhaps, some plausible reasons:
-Because Jesus was willing to show me
-Because we are in the End Times
-Because of a pure heart motive
-Because of God's spoken assignment that includes "expose the work of satan" and previous revelations
-Because of the simple belief in the literal truth of God's account of creation and the account of the worldwide flood.
-Because of the belief that the Word of God is thee authority and is the inerrant literal truth from the very 1st verse of Genesis through the last verse of Revelation.

What Happened to these Sons of God (Angels)
I would like to point out that I do not think these sons of God were the fallen angels that fell with satan. It is believed that for a period of time God literally sent angels to minister to and work with mankind. What actually happened to these sons of God (angels) that entered into these unholy abominable unions with the daughters of men? I believe the answer is recorded in Jude.

Jude 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

I believe these angels kept in chains may well be the angels we, believers in Jesus Christ, will be called upon to judge as stated as stated in 1 Corinthians 6:3 "Know ye not that we shall judge angels?"

Elizabeth Murrill (@elizabethconsecratedtogod)

I glad to read this blog, as I have recently been shown this very thing by The Holy Spirit over the course of a few months of study. I wasn't even searching this out. I was reading Genesis 6 and couldn't believe my eyes. I had never heard of anything in the Bible about sons of God and daughters of men, I stopped and asked God "Are you trying to tell me that the fallen angels had babies with human women?". In the days and weeks that followed I learned about the Nephilim and the giants on the earth and God began putting the pieces together for me. I knew that I believed this truth based on the passage in Genesis and Jude and 2Peter. These angels that are locked away in the abyss that Jude mentions had to have done something more than just fall from heaven in the war with satan, becasue if that were the case then God would have imprisoned all of the fallen angels including satan. "Their crime was not staying in their own realm". I did not however entertain the first thought about demons until today, which is more than a month or two after I was shown by God about the giants of old. I guess I always assumed that the fallen angels became demons when they fell. I was reading in Revelation about how the anti-christ will neither regard the God of his fathers, nor the desires of women, or any other gods, but will exalt himself as a god. Lots of people interpret this to be the pagan diety that was worshipped by women during the time of Daniel, but something did'nt sit right with me about it and I immediately thought of how the fallen angel lusted after, desired women of earth. I know from a recent study of Revelation that the spirit of the antichrist that "posseses" him at the 3 1/2 year mark of the tribulation is one the bible says "was, and is not, and will be" this spirit was on the earth operating before the time of John who wrote Revelation, and is not operating during the time of John but is locked away in the abyss, and will be. He will be unleashed at the time of the antichrist and he is the spirit of lawlessness. Revelation says he (anti-christ) will neither honor the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, or any other gods. I now take this to mean he will not be like the fallen angels before him in the days before the flood and take women to produce offspring, setting themselves up as gods to the people, making there own seed. The antichrist will exalt himself as a god, not create giant sons to be exalted. This got me curious about the Hebrew phrase used in Revelation "hemdath nashiym" for desire women. I googled and found a webpage where someone was saying the same thing you have, that demons are the unclean spirits of these human-fallen angel spawn and they do not have their own bodies and this is why they posses people. I know that I didn't make this up, and I had no foreknowledge of it, and I know that the Holy Spirit has led me to this conclusion because of the way He has revealed it. I believe this is truth, and was glad to see your blog, as any time I mention this to anyone they kinda look at me like I've lost it. I also believe these demons are what people today believe are aliens etc. and may have also been the idols and dieties that were worshipped by some pagans along with the fallen angels still on earth. We know from the bible that principalities are still to this day in control of seat of government and influence as they were in the old testament. Daniel gives a sobering account how the "prince of Persia" fought with a messenger angel of God for 21 days trying to kepp him from getting to Daniel to explain the vision, and that the archangel Michael who watches over Jerusalem had to come intervene and fight in his stead so that he could get to Daniel. I am so thankful to God for opening my eyes more and more to the spiritual world! It has given me the knowledge and insight needed to put on the full armor of God and recognize the spiritual warfare that is being waged all around us every day. I welcome this gift of spiritual sight in as much a degree is God is willing to give me. Praise God that we have been shown the end, and we can stand firm in the knowledge that good has won, and our God is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
