The BIG problem with Christian Hip Hop

You could honestly say there is a problem with everything.

After all nothing is perfect - some things have small nagging issues, some have big problems. Christian hip hop has one big problem, one big issue - but it's not what your thinking.

It is not the style - it is not that hip hop is ungodly or anything like that. God can use any music style, heck this is a God that used a donkey to talk to someone, there is no doubt he can use flawed musicians.

So what then is this problem with hip hop?

The problem is actually a strength - and that is you can't just put Christian hip hop in the background and play it and hum along - you see hip hop in general has a message to say with its words, it is not just random things, it is a message, and Christian hip hop has a message of eternal consequence to give us.

So when the band Christcentric takes us through Ephesians or discusses TULIP or the reformation we need to stop and pay attention. When Shai Linne discusses the atonement, or the attributes of God we need to stop draw aside and pay full attention to the message he is delivering. When Timothy Brindle sings of the all sufficiency of Christ or total depravity we need to quiet what we are doing and focus our attention to the words.

So is this really a problem?

Well in one sense no of course not, it is a little bit factitious to say it is - but we realise that this Christian Hip Hop is not just a tune to make us feel good, it is not just to give us a warm glow inside. It is words that challenge us, that make us think through theological issues.

It is the reality of the gospel that is being discussed. It is true issues and not shallow issues.

So really the problem is we just can't put it on in the background and let it play like we can with much music - it forces your attention on to it - it forces you to stop and focus on the words - if forces you to interact with the song - to either agree or disagree with the lyrics. it is a style that makes you think through much and go beyond a three and half minute love song to words to show the way to be given eternal life.

Christian Hip Hop is an amazing genre of music - don't knock it without trying and try the artists I mentioned - and yes you will have a big problem - you will have to focus on the words and you may just find yourself engaging with an incredible potent message that will cause change in your very life.

Be challenged today and listen to Christian Hip Hop.

Yes - it's true - my title was perhaps misleading, but I guess I was leading people to think about this issue. I like all the artists you mention - Shai Linne and Timothy Brindle are my two favourites - but yes it is fantastic to have to stop and say what are they saying and listen to the words

Thanks for you kind thoughts - good to have another hip hop fan on here!

I don't listen to Christian hip hop but you bring up a very interesting point about our tendency to label a particular genre of music godly or ungodly. My husband is a media technician and part of his job involves mixing sound not just for events his employer sponsors but for events he does freelance work for as well. This week it was Swedish folk music, a few weeks ago it was reggae. Next week it is blues. His favorite gig is touring with a college-sponsored ensemble of 40-50 members which plays traditional African music primarily from Ghana.

When he hears Christians criticize a particular music genre, he challenges them to listen to two notes and tell him... which note is sacred and which note is secular. They can't of course.

Music was created by God. I know a lot of Christians attempt to credit the enemy with creating it but that just is not possible. God creates. We only build upon or use what God created. We cannot truly "create" anything.

Two artists paint pictures. One picture depicts beauty and stirs your heart and emotions in a positive manner. The other picture depicts obscenity and evil. Is the paint evil because it can be used to portray both good and evil? Of course not! What it portrays depends upon what the artist does with it.

Music is no different. In the hands of the godly, it will move the hearts of the listeners towards God. In the hands of the ungodly, it will attempt to drive you away from God. Notice I said attempt in that last sentence. That was on purpose. The fact that God created music means that there are times, despite the best efforts of the musician or composer, that the music or lyrics of a secular song will in fact inadvertently draw the listener to God. Isn't it marvelous how God can use even a "donkey" according to His purpose?

Blessings!

Good blog seano. It points to a problem that many Christians have with change. I am in a discussion with a man on another blog site about the validity of any Bible other than the KJV. So anything other than the way we do it is going to be challanged. Just rember the true test of anything we call 'Christian' is does it lift up Jesus. I look forward to reading more from you.

Yours in Christ, Lum

Thanks for your thoughts Lum - I agree with you - it's not about the style is it, it is about does it bring glory to the name of Jesus - if you looked up some of the artists I mentioned on you tube you would soon see they truly glorify God with what they sing - try Atonement Q & A by Shai Linne.

I don't get the whole KJV only thing - as a kid I did not truly understand the Bible because we basically only had the KJV. It is not the original English translation and is far from perfect. It is like a lot of things use it if you want but for me the NIV or the NASB or the NLT, even the ESV which I find clunky to read are better for me to understand the gospel. Anyway good luck with your discussions!

seano, I agree totally with your assessment of the Bible translations. to My way of thinking it's not the translation you read, it's whether you know the author. If you do, and you study with Him as your teacher and guide, He will make His meaning known to you. This argument over which translation to use is just another tool Satan uses to divide the members of the body just as he tries to divide us over the type of music we use to praise our Lord.

Thanks again for the reply and I will check out those artist

God Bless.
