Small bit on word studies

“Word studies are useless” why and what prompted that, because a word only has value in the context the author is using it and worth if you understand the word in that context. Since I have always done word studies I thought I’d explore just a little with you.

A few examples:
Salvation
Shirt
Jesus
What salvation and from whom or what, what type, kind, or color of shirt, millions of people have this name – which is meant, all or one. Another point: if a writer only uses a word once or twice does this really add more importance to that word, no (not by itself), it may be the only time/s the writer needed that word. The word Grandmother is used once and it is important only in the structure of its sentence and sentence within its surrounding text.

When researching a word in a gospel or letter of scripture start within that to understand how the author uses it in the sentence, in the paragraph, in the subject. Then see how that word is used by others in like matter. A single word can be used in different ways for different meanings (grave – for instance). It can also be unclear requiring one to rely on the words before and after along with a compilation of its usages by other authors in order to build an understanding.
An author can use a simple word that requires digging to learn the culture in eating habits or clothing styles – custom.

When you hear the phrase – the first time a word is used in scripture is important – remember every word in scripture is used the first time at some point. It isn't the word as much as it is the words forming meaning, context, and fluidity, forming a picture, a view of what God is saying and how he wants use to understand what he is saying.

We get to see the people, their thoughts and actions, what is worn and discarded, where they lived and how they buried loved ones all with a clash of cultures to investigate, a world of places to discover and all foreign in thinking, customs, and language.

I think over the years I have made all the mistakes and now and again repeat one or two. The biggest problem I see is people taking things out of context and/or including things into the context that isn't there or just plan not including all that is there.

Something I enjoy about being on this site is the large variety of shared knowledge and understanding.
God Bless

I love, love, love word studies but as you say, it is absolutely critical that we consider the context. Often I think we also fail to take into account the setting. Historical background and knowledge of the customs of the society the writer was living in, who their audience was, etc. are important pieces as well. You don't have to be a Bible Scholar in the formal sense but understanding the background and culture is very useful in helping you get "the big picture".

Are things in danger of getting "lost in translation"? Yes, they are. Sigh... I also have a tendency to take an idea and run with it because it looks like it fits or sounds good. That's when my husband will tell me, "Whoa... slow down! You might be right but you might be wrong. You have got to look at the context!" Then he starts piling up books around me... big thick ones... sigh... and won't continue the conversation until I have done some detective work and can substantiate my statements.

Blessings!

"Whoa... slow down! You might be right but you might be wrong.

I think I like your Husband...lol

Your right and I don't think I mentioned "who the writer is talking too" above so thank you for bringing it up.

There is a lot I didn't cover here but I hope it helps some and encourages others to do a little more research - "detective work".

Joy!

I don't understand why one would think 'word studies are useless'. They help us to learn a lot. If people do not believe what they mean, it may be useless to keep trying to show them. And of course His word is 'spiritually discerned'. Full revelation always honors and glorifies the Son, Jesus Christ.

Personally I understand it as inspired of God, and living. If I believe and follow its teachings, it makes me more like Christ. It teaches us all we need to know about life, really. Creation, history, redemption. The history part teaches to 'not do as they did', so most forget the 'why'. Teaches about God. Evil. What is in the future. Who that future is in, Jesus Christ. HE is central to everything. And 'word studies' are very benefical regarding all of it.

Anyhow, ignore them, they do not know what they are talking about:) God Bless.

The first sentence is actually a quote from a very good Scholar. You are absolutely correct, they are beneficial, if studied and rightly applied.

Translating is not an easy thing and it takes more than just looking up the Greek/Aramaic/Hebrew word with its meaning. Hey, we all know reading and understanding it in English is difficult enough at times.

Read the whole sentence (first sentence), if a word is taken out of context and meaning changed, or ignored from how the writer was using it then it becomes dangerous and misleading. Sadly, this is done to often (by accident or purpose is not always known) by Christians.

The Word of God is inspired, spiritually discerned, and about Christ (redemption). We might think about this too, God had it written so even the gentile/barbarian could understand and discover Him.

I know you have put in hard work in this area and know the value and riches of that work from the Holy Spirit. Thank you for your comment.

For many years I taught Bible studies many nights per week and the majority of my teachings were simple word studies. Looking back, some were spot on and some were simply a lazy way to quickly put together a teaching. Properly done, word studies are an incredible way to learn the Word of God. Improperly done, they can confuse a person and lead them astray. As you say, context is essential as well as making sure the word is correctly translated etc. I think every believer should have either a Strong's or Young's concordance just to do simple word studies so as to get a feel for the scope of the Word of God. Great blog and welcome back brother.

I too am very interested in word studies, and they form the basis of some of my blogs. I agree that one must be careful and conscienious when studying a verse.
