Christian Book Review I

Here is a list of some of the books I have read over the years that have had a notable impact on my life as a Christian. They all provide some meaty content to ponder.

"The Pilgrim's Progress" by Jon Bunyan - This timeless classic allegorizes the path of the Christian life and the challenges we face, from the City of Destruction (where we start, in a lost sense) to the Celestial City (Heaven.) In my opinion, this is perhaps the greatest literary work outside the Bible written in the English language, albeit Old English. John Bunyan really "got it" when it comes to understanding the Christian walk.

"Shantung Compound" by Langdon Gilkey - A professor's story of being rounded up into a Japanese internment camp in China during World War II. The camp was composed of foreigners (non-Chinese) and included a potpourri of Christians; priests, nuns, pastors and missionaries, including Erik Liddell, Olympic Gold Medalist and the main character of "Chariots of Fire." These people were basically forced to organize a functioning community within the camp walls, with limited provisions provided by the Japanese, in order to survive. Prof. Gilkey alternates between telling of his experiences there and his assessments of those experiences, how they challenged his formerly atheistic understanding of human nature. He assesses his views and the actions of the various Christian "leaders" objectively and extensively, the good and the bad, which ultimately led to his eventual acceptance of the Christian faith. This book taps into the intellectual side of the Christian faith and gives us a lot to think about in terms of understanding human nature.

"Chasing the Dragon" by Jackie Pullinger - As a young English woman, Jackie sailed around the world to Hong Kong and moved into the "Forbidden City", a gang and drug infested neighborhood where even the police feared to enter. No youth were able to escape being forced into crime, drugs and prostitution. Jackie, with faith and by the power of the Holy Spirit, set about transforming the entire community, setting hundreds of drug addicts free. By her faith and courage she was able to confront gang leaders, all the way to the top. God provided her divine protection in what would otherwise be considered impossible, and deadly, situations. In her book she reveals how to be fruitful in the Holy Spirit, something we all, as children of God, desire to be.

"God's Smuggler" by Brother Andrew - With an inclination towards adventure and a mountain of faith Brother Andrew drove carloads of Bibles through the Iron Curtain, bringing the Word of God to persecuted Christians where it was illegal to be in possession of a Bible. Time and time again God blinded the border guards so that His people could know Him through His Word. This book will encourage your faith.

"The Heavenly Man" by Brother Yun and Paul Hattaway - This book tells the story of Brother Yun and how God has used this Chinese man in modern day China; from his preaching to the underground church, to his intense persecution by the Chinese government, to his countless converts and disciples in prison, to his miraculous healing and escape from high security prison, to his ultimate escape from China; his story exemplifies a version what we read about in Acts in a modern day setting.

I'm sitting here looking at a book my son who is going into 10th grade, had to read over the summer. IT's called THE ROBE by Lloyd C. Douglas. It looks interesting and I'm hoping to get to read it soon. It says "The enduring classic of one man's quest for Faith and Truth".

Other books you might be interested are:
The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis

One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Confessions & City of God, St. Augustine

Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis

Silas Marner & Mill on the Foss by George Eliot

Iceland Fisherman, History of a Childhood, Pierre Loti

The Red and the Black by Stendahl

In addition to these, you can always refer to my profile which lists my favorite books.

catholicchristian,

It's interesting that you mention "Ivan" as it was one of my favorite books from my childhood. Few of those school-mandated readings ever made it on my favorites list, but Ivan did. I even drew a layout of Ivan's prison camp in drafting class. I have often contemplated reading it again as an adult. I have also read much of C. S. Lewis' work, including Mere Christianity. I hope to get to City of God someday. Can you give me a one to two sentence synopsis on the others you mention? I'd like to know what is appealing about them. Perhaps others would as well.

lukefour27,

Thanks for the appreciation. Part II of my list may be a while, and might even include a few suggestions made here.

God Bless
