Blog Entries: Total Word Length Limitation

Hello everybody,

It is not every day that we decide to invoke new rules and policies here at ChristianBlog.Com, but today is one of those days.

Starting at the time of this Blog Entry being published, we have put into place a new "minimum blog-length limitation" concerning Blog Entries.

This new rule does not affect the maximum length of Blog Entries, as that is already defined by whether you are a Premier Member or not.

Rather this new rule affects the minimum length of Blog Entries.

A large number of our Premier Members have been sending us messages about the massive amount of "short blogs" that have been posted recently, and we behind-the-scenes have also noticed it.

As is stated within our Blog Posting Policy:

Blogging Verses Discussion Forums

To many there is a fine line between what defines the difference between a "Blog" and a "Discussion Forum" and it is our belief that a "Blog Entry" is best defined as a researched topic that contains commentary combined together with text, images, links, and other related media, to form a multi-paragraphed chronological publication of comments and thoughts by the author - while as a "Discussion Forum Thread" is posted for the primary purpose of receiving feedback, comments, and to directly initiate 'discussion' from other people.

We believe that a Blog Entry should rarely be posted for the direct intent to initiate discussion about a given topic - unlike what one might do with a Discussion Forum Thread -- thus the proper terminology of a 'Discussion Forum' comes into place.

The primary purpose of a Discussion Forum is to initiate a discussion about a given topic, through a one-line question or a multi-paragraphed introduction on a given topic. Unlike a Discussion Forum Thread, a Blog Entry is intended to be a researched commentary formed into a multi-paragraphed chronological publication of comments and thoughts by the author.

Think of a Blog as an online personal journal or research paper. In the privacy of your own house, when you sit down to write in your journal, diary, or to write a research paper, it is with the known intent that others will not be writting follow-up comments within your personal publication (journal, diary, whatever). This in it's truest sense defines an online Blog - with the exception that an online Blog website, such as ChristianBlog.Com, allows you to select if you desire other members of the same online website can post feedback, comments, or thoughts on your publication.

We here at ChristianBlog.Com invite all members to utilize our website with the fullest intent to create full publications of your researched topics, rather then utilizing ChristianBlog.Com as simply an online website to post a one or two sentence "question" to which other members of ChristianBlog.Com reply to, to share their own thoughts about your question.

ChristianBlog.Com reserves all right to remove Blog Entries that our staff feel does not contain the necessary researched content to qualify a given Blog Entry as a valid Blog, as defined within the first paragraph of this Blog Posting Policy Section.

The Issue from where we are:

One of the major "issues" we knew we would be facing when we started this website was the issue of our members posting one or two line "questions", rather than multi-paragraphed "blogs". To be very honest, we were not sure how to deal with it, nor when we should start dealing with it, and, how bad it would get.

The time has been coming for many weeks now to being to deal with this issue, and as much as we could keep ignoring it, that is simply not the right thing for us to do.

Here is how we plan to initial address this issue. We have now put into place a "counter" on the first page of adding a Blog Entry. This counter will count the total number of words you have typed into your Blog Message, and return the total number of words for you. Once you have reached 150+ words, you will not have to worry about this limitation, and can continue ahead without any problems.

Limitation Exceptions:

So, are there any "exceptions" to this limitations?

At first, we had thought to ourselves, "hey, why not allow people adding (a) prayer request, or (b) introductions, or (c) poems, to not have this minimum word-count limitation?"

But the more we thought about it, the more we began to realize, 150 words (the present minimum limitation) is not all that hard to reach!

Even a simple prayer request, by explaining the situation, your specific needs, and any details concerning prayer, can easily be presented in over 150-words.

And for those posting poems, even short poems, why not share a little bit about the poem, what it means to you, and how it might apply to your life! Sure, your poem may not be 150-words, but what you share with us about your poem can easily be more than 150-words!

Some of our members like to post a Blog Entry with nothing other than a video hosted at any of the popular video-hosting websites... this will stop those folks from doing this! A simple "video-in-a-blog" just cannot be called a "blog". So, now you will have to actually share with us your thoughts about the video!! Imagine that!

So, to answer the question... no, ALL Blog Entries are to be restricted to 150-words, at minimum.

Well, there is ONE exception to this... If you are a Premier Members and utilize the IntaBlog feature (which is an amazing, premier-member-only feature, that allows you to very quickly add new blog entries without all the 'other questions' we normally ask/require). The large majority of our Premier Members already publish Blog Entries that are over 150-words in length, so we feel not even presenting them with this is necessary.

To address those who might not like this:

We do realize a number of our present members may not like this "minimum blog-length limitation" -- and really all we can say is... "Guys, how hard can it possible be to write 150-words??!!??!!".

If you really-really-really do not like this limitation, consider this: (1) become a Premier Members and (2) using our InstaBlog, and (3) voicing your opinion as a Premier Member.

We have a "Premier Members Category" setup specifically for our Premier Members to voice and address their concerns to us. Because Premier Members help pay the bills this website incurs we do give a higher level of attention to what they want and ask of us.

In Closing:

To Review all of this:

As of this moment we have implemented a "minimum blog-length limitation".

At this time the "minimum blog-length limitation" is 150-words.

We reserve the right to increase or decrease this in the future, should it be warranted and highly requested by our Premier Members and/or to help with website integrity.

This is mainly be put into place to help remind our members of our Blog Posting Policies which clearly make a distinction between a "blog entry" and a "discussion thread" (like you would see at a forums website). A Blog Entry is not the place to ask a one-line-question and expect people to just respond -- Rather a Blog Entry is a place for YOU to share what YOU BELIEVE about a given topic, and than allow others to share what THEY believe.

I'm really new to the whole Blog thing and really appreciate you putting on what a blog should be and defining the difference between a Blog and Discission Forum. It would seem most of what I've seen elsewhere listed as Blogs really aren't Blogs at all.
I wanted you to know even though I really haven't done many Blogs I am enjoying the site and finding great things and people here.

Support,

Does this limitation effect the length of a comment?

Thanks,

I'll just answer my own question here (since I tried it out myself). :teach:

Nope, this doesn't apply to comments.

Hello,

To quickly address the few comments so far:

Yes, we are as guilty of allowing this as most other "blog websites" are. The biggest difference between it happening at ChristianBlog.Com and it happening elsewhere, is that ChristianBlog.Com is a human regulated/reviewed/monitored website.

We let the world know on our home page, and a lot of other places, that we have people who review the content of the website every day, unlike nearly every other blog-website out there.

As such, we must continue to maintain a higher level of assurance towards both our policies, and the very people we are ministering too -- often times, this involves being 'the bad guy', which is something we just have to expect.

I think our members have been doing an amazing job since we officially went public on December 16th, 2006. The discussion here has been reach and fruitful. This "minimum blog-length limitation" is not intended to squash the ministry that is taking place here, but rather to help enrich and and make it more fruitful and plentiful.

As you discovered for yourself, no the "minimum blog-length limitation" does not apply to Blog Comments.

We could find no justifiable reason to apply it to Blog Comments.

A very large amount of Blog Comments are individuals simply saying, "Hey, great blog, you touched my heart, thanks!"

Implementing a "minimum blog-Comments-length limitation" would mostly likely hurt, rather then help.

If you read a blog and simply want to say "awesome word man!" (three-words), that is just you sharing with the Blog Author a "well done" message, and it should be left at that.

No reason we can see to start forcing people into long Blog Comments.

Hey Support,

I just wanted to add here that the time out feature, where you get that warning to hit preview, you need to have 150 before you can preview. At least that's how it worked for me on my last blog. The warning comes up after about 5 mins., into 150 words is 30 words per minute. I just did 37 per minute on this site.
With thinking while I'm typing, I'm much slower. I can however chew gum and walk at the same time.

I totally agree with the 150 minimum...even went back and added to one of my previous blogs.
I'm back to my "select all" and "copy" method though so I don't lose my blogs.

Hello phil47

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this new rule.

I'm back to my "select all" and "copy" method though so I don't lose my blogs.

Yes, that really is the best method. Write your blog entries in MS Word, or OpenOffice Write, or whatever your favorite text-editor is, than log into ChristianBlog.Com and post your new blog.

That way, you have a far superior spell-checker, grammatic checker, and you never have to worry about having your login expire.

Last, and perhaps most importantly, that allows you to save all of your Blog Entries on your own computer, so you have them for years ahead, should we lose them or something worse.

It seems there is a snag in the 150 word limit. If you try to edit a blog after it has been posted, it tells you you don't have enough words, even if you do.
