The Revelation - Chap 1

The apostle John is believed to be the writer of The Revelation. He was the son of Zebedee and Salome and the younger brother of apostle James.

Christians regard John as the apostle of love because of love being the consistent theme presented in the gospel and epistles he wrote. He is seen as kind and gentle, understanding and loving, however he was not always this way. It is clear both he and his brother James were headstrong and opinionated. So much so Jesus dubbed them the Sons of Thunder (Mark 3:17). Once they irritated their companions by asking Jesus if they could sit on His right and left hand in glory (Mark 10:35-45). On another occasion James and John wanted to call fire down from heaven on a Samaritan village who had not received them well (Luke 9:51-56). It is amazing how much a person changes when Jesus enters into their life. With many, as it was with the apostle John, the change is a process.

John was raised in Capernaum and later lived in Ephesus. He wrote the Book of Revelation later in his life while he was exiled on the Island of Patmos. The Revelation was most probably written in the early to mid 90AD time frame.

Verse one clearly identifies this Revelation of Jesus Christ came from God and that John was the mouth and pen who communicated it to His servants. It tells of things which must €œshortly€ take place. Shortly, as used here, in the original is €œen€ which means it will happen at a fixed time. Further connotation is that once it does begin, it will happen quickly or swiftly.

The Revelation given by God through John to the seven churches which are in Asia (v4). There are many opinions in Christendom about just who these seven churches are. I believe the seven churches represent:

(1) Things which John had seen: Seven churches which were located in Asia at the time the Revelation came forth. At the time all seven were located in what is known as Turkey today.

(2) Things which are: The condition of each church individually at the time of the Revelation.

(3) Things which will take place after this: The dominant condition of the Church (entire body of Christ) over time beginning in the first century until the end of the Church age. To clarify (as I see it), when the Revelation was given the dominant condition of the Church (entire body of Christ) was that of the Ephesian church and changed over the years ( Smyrna - Pergamos - Thyatira - Sardis - Philadelphia - ) until the dominant condition of the Church (entire body of Christ) becomes that of the Laodicean church.

The text makes it clear Revelation is from the entire Godhead (v4-5):

(1) God: Him who is, who was, and who is to come.

(2) Holy Spirit: The seven Spirits who are before His throne.

(3) Jesus: clearly stated in verse 5

In verse 6 Christians are called €œkings and priests€ to His God and Father.€ Are we truly kings and priests now? In the eternal eyes of God we are. Even more, when Jesus returns to rule and reign on earth, He will bring us with Him and we will rule and reign with Him on earth (Rev 2:26-27; 5:10; 19:14; 20:6; 2 Tim 2:12).

Verse seven is speaking of the return of Jesus to earth, not of the catching up of the Church.

In verse twelve we see John turning to €œsee€ the voice which spoke with him. Have you ever seen a voice? The only voice which has ever been seen is Jesus, the Word of God Who came in the flesh. The person he saw when he turned was none other than Jesus.

We see Jesus standing in the midst of the seven golden lamp stands (v13). The seven golden lamp stands are the seven churches (20). Assurance, He was in the midst of the church then, being in the midst of all seven golden lamp stands He assures us He will be in the midst of the Church (entire body of Christ) over the entire Church age, therefore we can be sure He is in our midst now.

Jesus has the keys of Hades and of Death (v18). The word Hades is a NT word and is the same as the word Sheol in the OT. Hades is the place (state) of departed souls. Hades has two compartments (Luke 16:19-26). One compartment containing righteous souls (a place of comfort) and the other containing the souls of the unrighteous (a place of torment). There is a great gulf separating the two sides. The side containing the souls of the righteous was known as Abraham's Bosom. This is the paradise spoken of by Jesus to the thief on the cross (Luke 23:43). Jesus, when he descended into the earth lead captivity captive (Ps 68:18; Eph 4:8-10). Therefore the souls of righteous men are no longer in the lower parts of the earth but in heaven with Jesus.

I can say AMEN and praise God to that. How about you?

Blessings,
Tch

Tch, two things in Chapter 1, I wanted to comment on. I promised I would be good, so I hope no sparks fly. Verse 10, "the Lords day", it will be obvious my view, but I am interested in others. It is documented that the early Christians celebrated the Lords Supper on the first day of the week, so it became known as the Lords Day. 1st and 2nd century documents indicate Sunday was for Christian worship. References would be 1 Cor. 11:20 (Lords Supper), 1 Cor. 16:1,2 (collection for the saints on the 1st day), Acts 20:7-12 (gathered on the 1st day for preaching and breaking of bread). Interested in others input. But I am not interested in Greek magic, I already checked the Greek here.

The other is verse 17. John had leaned on Jesus Christ during the night of Christs' betrayal, and was a close friend. As John sees Jesus Christ here, he falls at His feet as one dead, stricken by His Power and Glory. I believe as Christians we would do well to realize the Christ we now serve. Thanks for the study, billy

The seven Churches are miniature pictures of seven Church Ages

From the First Century Church to the Third Century you had deviation from the early Apostle's doctrine of Grace. Ephesus, who left their first love. AD 100 likewise men deviated from a consciousness to the Holy Spirit's work and presence as taught in the Epistles. Water Baptism in all modes was rampant for centuries and still is today. The teachings of Sanctification through the Spirit dwindled as dead works prevailed. Regardless of the doctrines of men... the Body of Christ still existed through these Ages. Smyrna, that Age ranged from 100-312

You had Roman Governments ruled by Caesars for 212 years, Jewish insurrections, and Political ties to the Religious world. On the Gentile side you had Philosophies and Pagan religious worship that crept in. Jewish Law and Gentile Philosophy mixed with Grace instead of Grace alone in the Body of Christ. Papal supremacy which began at Constantine ruled for centuries. The Church, Christ's body still existed through this Age. Pergamum means joined in marriage that Age ranged from 312-590

You had the origin of Priestly worship called the Nicolatians. You had plain religion and a Jezebel spirit that seduced men into religion and politics rather the Grace of God through Christ alone. Deviation from holiness and righteousness by Grace. The Body of Christ still existed through this Age.

The Word of God was written and preserved in Latin. Priestly worship, Politics, and religion permitted crusades, wars, and dominance over Israel throughout Europe and that side of the earth for centuries. This continued through the Dark Ages as the Body of Christ still existed through that Age. Thyatira allowed the Jezebel Spirit to seduce that Age that ranged from 590-1517

Then you had a Reformation where men began to protest the Roman Church, roman Papacy, and Rome's religious teachings. The reformation brought English translations of the Word of God to all Europe. The Protestant reformation existed for years where the King James Version of the Bible in English was also introduced. The Body of Christ still existed in this Church Age of Sardis . That Age ranged from 1517-1750

After the Reformation you had an Awakening that swept the world for three centuries. During this awakening God used mighty men of God to preach revival throughout Europe and continents all the way to the United States where revival likewise swept the U.S. with the power and presence of the Holy Ghost. That was the Azuza Street Revival that became a great testimony for Christ in the 1900's. Philadelphia in John's Revelation was the only perfect Church ...that Age ranged from 1750-1925

The Seven Churches of John were actual Churches at that time however; those miniture pictures of the seven Churches also revealed the religious and political conditions that existed through the Ages until now. We are presently in the seventh Age, which is the Church of Laodicia. 1925-to present. Unfortunately this Church Age is neither hot nor cold it's lukewarm. This lukewarm state is obvious for anyone who knows Christ to see; Just look around. This self-sufficient lukewarm religious condition in 2010 that makes God sick enough to vomit.

€ Rev 3:16-17€So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

The Revelation of Christ in chapters 1-3 deals with miniature pictures of conditions that took place in the Seven Church Ages.

In Chapter Four of Revelation the Spirit of God took John up to Heaven, away from future catastrophic conditions and revealed to John what it will be like, hereafter. Hereafter what? The closing of this Laodician Age where the entire body of Christ is caught up to meet with Christ in the air. The Hindering work of the Holy Spirit steps aside and the Wrath and Judgment seat from an Almighty God begins. Our present Church age is moving toward this closing where the Rapture of the Church will be a believer's only escape from Christ's future Wrath and Judgment where the Anti-Christ steps in. The closing of this Age is described in the following verse when John says, After this.

€ Rev 4:1: After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

First words after this (present conditions of the lukewarm Laodician Age).

Secondly, come up hither (dead in Christ and those alive being caught up in the Rapture).

Third, I will show you things hereafter (Hereafter what?) The Rapture. What takes place on Earth after the Church is removed. Mercy is gone. The Omnipresence of the Holy Spirit as we know it in the Church is gone. Then come's the seals, vials, trumps, and the woes through the Wrath of the Lamb and the Judgment seat of Christ.

The Revelation of Christ in the Rapture shows how God is going to deliver His Church the Bride from a predicted devastation, Wrath, and Judgment. That deliverance is only a glimpse of God calling out His saints in the Rapture and taking them to refuge in Heaven before the Anti-Christ and works of Satan begin on the earth. Revelation thus describes Tribulation, Wrath, and Judgment on the Earth BUT!!! All this takes place after the Rapture of the Church.
